A tragic morning unfolded in Delhi as heavy rainfall and strong winds not only brought the city to a standstill but also claimed four lives from one family. Three children and their mother died after a tree crashed onto their house, while over 100 flights were delayed, roads waterlogged, and city life thrown into disarray due to severe weather conditions across Delhi-NCR.
The fatal incident occurred in Kharkhari Nahar village near Jaffarpur Kalan, where a tree fell on the roof of a house during the early morning storm. The house collapsed under the impact, trapping 26-year-old Jyoti and her three young children beneath the rubble. Emergency teams, including police and fire services, rushed to the scene after a PCR call alerted authorities.
Despite being pulled from the debris and taken to the hospital, all four victims were declared dead on arrival. Jyoti’s husband, Ajay, who was also in the house, sustained minor injuries. The heartbreaking loss left the entire neighborhood in shock as residents struggled with the aftermath of the intense storm.
Flights hit, roads flooded as rain lashes city
As heavy rain pounded the national capital, several areas like Dwarka, RK Puram, and Lajpat Nagar experienced severe waterlogging. Commuters faced long traffic snarls, while airport operations were heavily disrupted. Delhi Airport reported over 100 flight delays due to the unfavourable weather, leading to major inconvenience for travellers.
The Delhi airport issued an advisory on social media, urging passengers to check with airlines for updates. Though some reports suggested structural damage at Terminal 3, authorities later clarified that no damage had occurred. Meanwhile, Air India and IndiGo issued alerts warning about potential delays and urged passengers to stay informed.
Strong winds uproot trees, disrupt power supply
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red alert earlier in the day, warning of thunderstorms with wind speeds reaching 70–80 km/h. The storm brought down several trees, damaged power lines, and caused partial damage to temporary structures and kutcha houses. The IMD also advised residents to stay indoors, unplug electronics, and avoid sheltering under trees or going near water bodies.
With more rain and gusty winds expected over the next three days, the IMD has placed the capital under a yellow alert, forecasting continued weather disturbances with temperatures ranging from 27°C to 39°C.
