  • Government likely to introduce censure motion; security tightened amid recent threats.
  • Delhi Assembly to hold special session on Women Reservation Bill after Lok Sabha developments.

The Delhi Legislative Assembly is set to convene a special session to discuss the Women Reservation Bill, following intense political developments in Parliament. The move comes in response to the opposition blocking the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, which aimed to expand Lok Sabha seats and introduce 33 percent reservation for women.

According to officials, the session is expected to be held as a one-day proceeding, although it may be extended depending on the discussions and developments during the day. The session reflects the growing political focus on women’s representation and the broader implications of the bill’s rejection in the Lok Sabha.

Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta confirmed that the session has been called specifically to deliberate on the events that unfolded in Parliament. The discussion is expected to center on the opposition’s role in blocking the bill and the implications for women’s political participation in India.

The Delhi government is also likely to introduce a censure motion against opposition parties. The objective of this move is to highlight and criticize the actions of the Congress and its allies, accusing them of obstructing a key reform aimed at enhancing women’s representation in legislative bodies.

Officials indicated that the session has been formally convened following approval from Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu. The notification to summon the fifth session of the eighth Legislative Assembly has already been issued, ensuring that all procedural requirements have been met.

The political significance of the session extends beyond Delhi. Several Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled states, including Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh, are also planning or have already convened special sessions to discuss the same issue. This coordinated approach suggests a broader political strategy to address the fallout of the bill’s rejection.

In Madhya Pradesh, a special session has been scheduled to discuss “Nari Shakti Vandan – Holistic Development and Empowerment of Women.” Similarly, the Haryana Assembly has convened a session to deliberate on the developments, while Uttar Pradesh is set to hold its session later this week.

The Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, proposed a significant expansion of the Lok Sabha, increasing the total number of seats to 850. It also aimed to implement 33 percent reservation for women in Parliament in time for the 2029 general elections.

The bill’s defeat marked a notable political moment, as it was the first time since 2014 that a government-backed bill failed to pass in the Lok Sabha. The unified opposition stance played a crucial role in blocking the legislation, leading to sharp political reactions from the ruling party.

The upcoming session of the Delhi Assembly is expected to witness intense debates, with both sides presenting their perspectives on the issue. While the ruling side is likely to emphasize the importance of women’s reservation, the opposition may raise concerns about the structure and implications of the proposed amendment.

In a related development, Speaker Vijender Gupta announced that the Lieutenant Governor has prorogued the fourth session of the eighth Legislative Assembly with immediate effect. This decision formally concludes the previous session and paves the way for the new special session.

Officials stated that all necessary arrangements have been finalized by the Delhi Legislative Assembly Secretariat to ensure the smooth conduct of proceedings. Administrative preparations have been completed to facilitate discussions and maintain order during the session.

Security has been significantly tightened in and around the Assembly premises. In light of recent bomb threats, authorities have implemented enhanced security protocols to ensure the safety of members, staff, and visitors. Measures include increased surveillance, restricted access points, and deployment of additional security personnel.

The heightened security underscores the seriousness of the situation and the importance of maintaining a safe environment for legislative proceedings. Ensuring uninterrupted functioning of the Assembly remains a priority for the authorities.

The Women Reservation Bill continues to be a subject of national importance, with implications for gender equality and political representation. The discussions in the Delhi Assembly are expected to contribute to the broader debate on how best to implement such reforms.

Political observers note that the issue has the potential to shape future electoral narratives, as parties position themselves on matters related to women’s empowerment and governance.

The special session also highlights the role of state assemblies in addressing national issues and reflecting public sentiment. By convening such discussions, legislative bodies provide a platform for debate and policy discourse.

As the session unfolds, attention will remain focused on the arguments presented by different political parties and the potential outcomes of the discussions. The proceedings are likely to influence public opinion and political strategies in the coming months.

In conclusion, the Delhi Assembly’s decision to hold a special session on the Women Reservation Bill underscores the significance of the issue in the current political landscape. With heightened security and strong political engagement, the session is expected to be a key moment in the ongoing debate over women’s representation in India’s legislative system.
