Deepthi Jeevanji of India secured the gold medal in the women’s 400m T20 category race at the World Para Athletics Championships, setting a new world record with a remarkable time of 55.07 seconds. This victory marks a historic achievement for the 20-year-old athlete, who hails from Kalleda village in Warangal district, Telangana.
Para Asian Games gold medalist Deepthi Jeevanji surpassed the previous world record of 55.12 seconds, held by American athlete Breanna Clark, which was set during last year’s championships in Paris. Following Deepthi Jeevanji’s outstanding performance, Aysel Onder of Turkey secured the second position with a time of 55.19 seconds, while Lizanshela Angulo of Ecuador finished third with a time of 56.68 seconds.
Competing in the T20 category designed for athletes with intellectual impairment, Deepthi Jeevanji showcased exceptional skill and determination throughout the competition. She had earlier qualified for the final by winning her heat race with an Asian record time of 56.18 seconds.

Born to daily wage laborer parents, Deepthi Jeevanji has demonstrated extraordinary talent and resilience in her athletic career. She previously clinched the gold medal in the 400m T20 category at the Hangzhou Asian Games, setting an Asian record of 56.69 seconds. Notably, Deepthi has also competed alongside able-bodied athletes in both junior and senior championships, securing numerous medals in the process.
Her remarkable journey includes notable achievements such as winning a bronze medal in the 200m event at the 2019 Asian U18 Championships and competing in able-bodied senior events, where she continues to inspire with her exceptional performances.
In addition to Deepthi Jeevanji’s victory, Yogesh Kathuniya secured a silver medal in the men’s F56 category discus throw, while Bhagyashri Mahavrao Jadhav claimed a silver in the women’s shot put F34 class. With these achievements, India’s medal tally at the championships has now reached five, comprising one gold, two silver, and two bronze medals.
The World Para Athletics Championships will continue until May 25, showcasing the remarkable talents of para athletes from around the globe.
