The Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY), launched by the Government of India in December 2014, aims to bolster rural electrification efforts. The scheme includes setting up new substations, separating agriculture and non-agriculture feeders, augmenting old substations, adding HT< lines, transformers, and electrifying villages. It also covers off-grid electrification for areas where grid connectivity is not feasible or cost-effective.
Electrifying Rural India
One of the key objectives of DDUGJY is to provide electricity to all villages, ensuring that every household has access to this essential utility. The scheme includes the separation of agriculture and non-agriculture feeders, the augmentation of sub-transmission and distribution infrastructure, and the electrification of villages. It also emphasizes the use of off-grid modes for villages where grid connectivity is not feasible.
A Success Story
As reported by the states, all inhabited, un-electrified villages as per the 2011 Census were electrified by April 28, 2018. Under DDUGJY, a total of 18,374 villages were electrified, bringing light to millions of homes. The scheme also covered 1,27,68,620 households, providing them with access to electricity for the first time.
Transition and Expansion
The earlier scheme for rural electrification, the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana (RGGVY), has been subsumed under DDUGJY. This transition has enabled the initiation of much-awaited reforms in rural areas, focusing on feeder separation and the strengthening of sub-transmission and distribution infrastructure. These efforts are crucial for providing round-the-clock power to rural households and ensuring adequate power supply to agricultural consumers.
Future Prospects
The DDUGJY scheme has an outlay of Rs. 76,000 crore, with the government providing a grant of Rs. 63,000 crore for its implementation. Projects worth Rs. 14,680 crore have already been approved, with Bihar being a major beneficiary. The implementation of this scheme is expected to improve agricultural productivity, boost rural businesses, and create new avenues for employment, thereby contributing to the comprehensive development of rural areas.
Empowering Rural India
DDUGJY is not just about electrifying villages; it is about empowering rural India. Access to electricity enhances agricultural productivity, improves access to healthcare and education, and opens up new opportunities for economic growth. The scheme’s focus on infrastructure development and electrification is a crucial step towards achieving inclusive growth and sustainable development in rural areas.
Continued Support
The government’s commitment to rural electrification is further underscored by its support under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). This scheme aims to strengthen distribution infrastructure and ensure uninterrupted power supply to all households. States have been advised to submit their Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) to the Ministry of Power for further assistance.
DDUGJY has emerged as a beacon of hope for rural India, bringing light and progress to millions of homes. With its comprehensive approach and focus on rural development, the scheme is paving the way for a brighter future for rural communities across the country.
