Former South African fast bowler Dale Steyn has voiced his frustration with cricketers offering scripted and safe responses following matches, taking a subtle jab at Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Hardik Pandya after the team’s recent loss to Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Dale Steyn, known for his candid opinions, expressed his hope for more authentic expressions from players during moments of triumph or defeat. His comments came in response to Hardik Pandya’s composed demeanor in a post-match interview following MI’s disappointing performance against RR on April 22.
In the interview, Hardik Pandya maintained his usual calmness, opting for diplomatic phrases such as “trusting the process” and “sticking to basics,” which Dale Steyn found irksome. Dale Steyn urged Hardik Pandya and other cricketers to speak their minds candidly rather than resorting to cliches that lack genuine emotion.
On Twitter, Dale Steyn remarked, “I really look forward to the day players might say what’s honestly on their mind. Instead we somehow dumbed ourselves and our minds into saying the usual safe thing, lose the next game, smile and then repeat that nonsense again.”
Hardik Pandya’s individual performance in the match, where he scored 10 runs off 10 balls and conceded 21 runs from his two overs, further highlighted MI’s struggles. Despite the team’s collective disappointment, Hardik Pandya remained composed, emphasizing the need for learning and progression.
Addressing the post-match analysis, Hardik Pandya stated, “After the game, it’s not the right time to go to the players, everyone is professional, they know their roles. What we can do is learn from this game and the mistakes which we have made, rectify it and make sure that we don’t make it.”
The change in captaincy at MI, with Hardik Pandya taking over the reins, has faced scrutiny from fans, exacerbated by the team’s lackluster performance in the 2024 IPL season. The ongoing challenges have added pressure on Hardik Pandya, prompting discussions among supporters about the team’s leadership and strategy.
