New Delhi. Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, is not revealing the password of his iPhone to officials from the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Consequently, officials have reached out to Apple Inc. for assistance. Arvind Kejriwal, who was arrested in connection with a liquor scam, is not cooperating with the investigation conducted by the Enforcement Directorate.
This has resulted in officials being unable to access his Apple mobile phone for nearly as many days despite prolonged interrogation. According to reports, officials have reached out to Apple Inc. to unlock CM Kejriwal’s phone.
Mobile along with four cell phones confiscated
As electronic evidence, the Chief Minister’s Kejriwal private computer or desktop was not found. However, his mobile phone, along with four cell phones, has been confiscated. Among these is his wife Sunita Kejriwal’s mobile phone as well. At the time of his arrest on the night of March 21, 2024, approximately Rs. 70,000 was found in his residence. However, this amount was not confiscated.
AAP’s ‘electoral strategy’ data may be leaked
According to sources cited by the Indian Express, following his arrest, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has turned off his iPhone and has not shared its password with Enforcement Directorate officials. During interrogation, Kejriwal stated that the data and chats on his mobile phone would reveal information about AAP’s ‘electoral strategy’ and pre-election alliances.
According to the report, it is believed that the ED had formally contacted Apple Inc. to extract data from Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s iPhone. However, officials from the company have stated that the password is necessary to retrieve any data from the iPhone.
During questioning, Arvind Kejriwal informed the ED that he has had this iPhone for nearly a year. He also mentioned that the mobile phone he used during the development of the alcohol policy in 2020-2021 is no longer in his possession. Meanwhile, access to Sunita Kejriwal’s mobile phone has been granted to officials, and its data has been extracted.
Five-hour questioning daily
ED officials are questioning Arvind Kejriwal for five hours daily. According to a senior official, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has also filed a case in this matter. In such a scenario, the CBI may demand the remand of Arvind Kejriwal, whether in judicial custody or in Tihar Jail.
Allegations of illegal acquisition of funds
Indeed, the ED has accused Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of illicitly obtaining funds through the new liquor policy and acquiring a sum of Rs. 100 crore illegally. Of this amount, Rs. 45 crore was used for the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) 2021-22 election campaign in Goa.
During detention, Arvind Kejriwal faced former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia’s ex-PS C Arvind. Allegations were made in the remand application that C Arvind was handed over the draft of the ministerial group’s report on the alcohol policy at CM Kejriwal’s residence. Kejriwal reiterated C Arvind’s statement during questioning.
