  • Young Gukesh nears 2800 rating after stellar Olympiad performance.
  • Gukesh leads India to first-ever Chess Olympiad gold.

Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh has further solidified his position as one of the brightest stars in the chess world with a remarkable performance at the 2024 Chess Olympiad. Leading India to its first-ever gold medal in the prestigious biennial event, D Gukesh also claimed individual honors, winning the gold medal on Board 1 after securing nine victories from ten games. This stellar display not only marked a historic achievement for Indian chess but also underscored D Gukesh’s incredible form ahead of the World Championship.

At just 18, D Gukesh has already been touted as India’s next chess prodigy, following in the footsteps of Viswanathan Anand. His mastery was on full display in the eighth round of the Olympiad, where he played the black pieces against Iran’s Parham Maghsoodloo, using the Dubov variation in a Queen pawn game. D Gukesh’s triumph in that match contributed to a live rating of 2785, bringing him tantalizingly close to the elusive 2800 rating mark. If achieved, D Gukesh would become only the second Indian, after Anand, and the 16th player in chess history to surpass this threshold.

D Gukesh’s rise to prominence has been gradual but consistent, with many chess experts predicting his ascent since 2022. In the 2022 Chess Olympiad held in Chennai, India, D Gukesh was a standout player, contributing to India’s bronze medal win. His performance in that tournament, including a victory against former World Championship Challenger Fabiano Caruana, announced his arrival on the global chess scene. D Gukesh’s consistent display of tactical acumen and strategic depth in recent years has set him apart as one of the most formidable players of his generation.

In the 2024 Chess Olympiad, D Gukesh’s maturity and skill were evident throughout the tournament. He demonstrated the ability to exploit his opponents’ weaknesses and capitalize on even the smallest of errors. His path to victory was not without its challenges, but Gukesh’s composure and strategic play proved decisive. His performances have brought him to the brink of a historic World Championship match against reigning champion Ding Liren later this year.

D Gukesh’s victory in the 2024 FIDE Candidates Tournament further cemented his status as a chess prodigy. At just 17 years old, D Gukesh became the youngest-ever winner of the event and secured his place as the youngest challenger for the World Chess Championship. The tournament, held in Toronto, saw D Gukesh battle through a highly competitive field, which included top-tier players like Hikaru Nakamura, Fabiano Caruana, and Ian Nepomniachtchi. Despite facing setbacks, including a loss to Alireza Firouzja, D Gukesh’s resilience allowed him to come out on top, earning 9 points from 14 rounds.

His victory in the Candidates Tournament has generated significant excitement in the chess community, as D Gukesh’s youthful energy will now be pitted against the experience of reigning world champion Ding Liren. The upcoming World Chess Championship is set to be a landmark event, with D Gukesh’s breakthrough performance marking a new era for Indian chess. The match will also be historic as it will be the first World Chess Championship since 1886 without a European participant.

D Gukesh’s journey has been closely followed by chess fans and experts alike, as his meteoric rise mirrors the growing prominence of Indian chess on the world stage. With increased exposure and accessibility to live broadcasts of chess events, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, India has emerged as a chess powerhouse. D Gukesh’s achievements have become a symbol of this chess revolution, inspiring a new generation of players.

As D Gukesh prepares for his World Championship match against Ding Liren, he has already earned the respect of the global chess community. His rapid climb through the ranks and ability to perform under pressure make him one of the most exciting players to watch. Should Gukesh win the world title, it would mark a new chapter in Indian chess history and further solidify India’s position as a rising force in the chess world.
