In a response to escalating tensions, the Manipur government has enforced a curfew across the valley districts of the state following a tragic incident in Thoubal district’s Lilong area. Four individuals lost their lives when unidentified armed men, clad in camouflage, opened fire on locals. Additionally, five people sustained injuries in the attack.
Consequently, curfew orders were swiftly reinstated in Thoubal, Imphal East, Kakching, and Bishnupur districts to curb any potential fallout from the distressing event. The decision to reimpose curfew was announced by the district magistrate, who cited the need to maintain law and order, prevent untoward incidents, and safeguard lives and property.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh addressed the public via a video statement, expressing grave concern over the incident. He reassured the community that Manipur police are actively engaged in tracking down the perpetrators. “We do not take this incident lightly,” stated Singh. “I appeal to the people, particularly from Lilong, to refrain from resorting to any form of violence. We will take stringent actions against the culprits as per the law. Please cooperate with the government.”
The assailants, as yet unidentified, targeted locals in a ruthless attack. According to media reports the attackers had come “to extort money” from the locals, which led to a altercation. “Locals later chased away the men who opened fire while fleeing”, PTI quotes official saying.
Moreover, three people died on the spot and another person succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital. Many of those injured are said to be critical and shifted to hospitals.
Further, following the shooting, enraged residents set vehicles ablaze.
