After a period of relative calm, Covid-19 infections are increasing again in parts of Asia, including Hong Kong and Singapore. Indian experts urge caution but stress there is no need to panic, as most of the population already has immunity against severe disease. Mild infections resembling common colds may occur, so following basic precautions remains important, especially for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with health issues.
Rising Covid-19 Infections Across Asia
Recent reports from several Asian countries indicate a notable surge in Covid-19 cases. In Singapore, the Ministry of Health recorded around 14,200 new cases during the first week of May — a 28% rise compared to the previous week. Hospital admissions have also increased by roughly 30%. In Hong Kong, officials describe the situation as “quite high,” with respiratory samples testing positive at the highest level in the past year. The city also saw a rise in severe cases, reporting 31 deaths in the week ending May 3. Meanwhile, China’s national CDC noted that hospital test positivity rates more than doubled in the weeks leading to early May. Thailand faced two cluster outbreaks following its April Songkran festival.
Expert Advice from India: Stay Alert, No Need for Boosters
Indian virologists and scientists emphasize that while this uptick is expected due to waning immunity and minor virus changes, there is no evidence of a new, more dangerous variant. Dr. Saumitra Das, a virologist and chair at the Indian Institute of Science’s Department of Microbiology and Cell Biology, explained that the population is largely protected against severe disease thanks to widespread vaccination. He stressed the importance of vigilance, particularly in protecting vulnerable groups, but reassured that panic is unnecessary. Dr. Anurag Agrawal, former director of IGIB, confirmed no current need for booster doses since immunity against severe Covid-19 remains strong. Similarly, Dr. Shekhar Mande, former Director General of CSIR, advised monitoring the situation closely but stated there is no cause for alarm. He suggested that individuals with weaker immunity might consider wearing masks as a precaution.
The ongoing movement of people through major hubs such as Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai, and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata remains crucial to tracking and managing virus transmission and international connectivity.
