IOA President Stands Firm on CEO Selection Amid Criticism
In a decisive rebuttal to a faction of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), President PT Usha vehemently upheld the appointment of Raghuram Iyer as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), despite dissent from 10 of the 15 Executive Committee (EC) members.
The controversy stems from concerns over the selection process and the terms of Iyer’s appointment, with Usha declaring, “I have full faith in my CEO. He is the right person to take Indian sports forward,” emphasizing the appointment’s merit-based nature and alignment with International Olympic Committee (IOC) standards.
Salary Dispute Highlights Governance Concerns
At the heart of the dispute is Iyer’s salary, set at ₹20 lakh per month, resulting in an annual expenditure of ₹3 crore for the IOA. This figure has been labeled as extravagant by critics, sparking debate over the legality and prudence of the appointment process. Allegations of governance violations have been raised, suggesting the president overstepped her bounds in determining Iyer’s compensation without appropriate oversight.
IOA Looks Ahead Amidst Internal Strife

Despite the ongoing controversy, Usha and the IOA are focusing on future objectives, particularly the upcoming Paris Olympics. The organization’s decision to appoint a professional CEO for the first time underlines its commitment to elevating Indian sports internationally.
An emergency EC meeting slated for February 13 aims to resolve the discord. This episode underscores a critical juncture for the IOA as it grapples with issues of governance, transparency, and strategic direction in the pursuit of global sporting excellence.
