Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, has expressed concern over the escalating violence in Tripura, urging that it should not mirror the ethnic strife witnessed in Manipur. Gogoi’s remarks came following a meeting with Tripura Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu, where he and other senior Congress leaders discussed the recent violent incidents related to the Panchayat elections and ethnic unrest in Ganda Twisa, a town in the Dhalai district.
Gogoi emphasized the need for equal justice for all communities, condemning the violence that erupted in Ganda Twisa on July 12. The unrest followed the death of a tribal college student, Parameshwar Reang, who succumbed to injuries after being assaulted earlier in the month. The violence resulted in large-scale arson, destruction of property, and displacement of over 300 villagers.
The Congress party has criticized the Tripura government for its handling of the situation, alleging a breakdown in law and order and a failure to protect democratic processes. Gogoi accused the authorities of inaction, claiming that the violence has jeopardized the upcoming Panchayat elections scheduled for August 8.
The Tripura High Court has intervened, directing the State Election Commission (SEC) to ensure that the elections are conducted freely, fairly, and transparently. This order came in response to petitions filed by the Congress and CPI-M, highlighting concerns about the integrity of the electoral process amid ongoing violence.
Gogoi and other Congress leaders have called for Governor Nallu’s intervention, stressing the importance of maintaining peace and ensuring that all political parties can participate in the electoral process without fear or intimidation.
