In the aftermath of India’s military action against terror hotspots in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, Congress leader Udit Raj has sparked a controversy over the operation’s codename, “Sindoor.” The operation, which was a direct response to the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, targeted terrorist infrastructure linked to the attack. However, Raj’s comments about the name of the operation, which is closely associated with Hindu tradition, have ignited a political firestorm.
Udit Raj’s Remarks on the Operation’s Codenames
Udit Raj, a Congress leader, questioned the decision to name the operation “Sindoor,” arguing that it is tied to a specific religion—Hinduism. He pointed out that Sindoor, traditionally worn by Hindu women, represents their marital status and is deeply embedded in religious symbolism. The operation’s codename was approved by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to symbolize India’s response to the Pahalgam attack, where terrorists targeted and killed men, many of whom were newly married. Raj suggested that a more neutral name should have been chosen, one that would not be so closely linked to a particular religion.
While making his point, Raj acknowledged the operation’s intent but emphasized that the symbolism behind the name was problematic. He said, “After speaking to intellectual people, I concluded that Sindoor is associated with a particular religion (Hinduism). It would have been better if some other name had been chosen. Anyway, the important thing is that Pakistan has been taught a lesson.” Despite this critique, Raj’s remarks have been met with significant backlash.
Strong Reactions from BJP Leaders
West Bengal BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul strongly criticized Raj’s comments, dismissing them as ignorant and ill-informed. Paul argued that the naming of the operation was a direct response to the tragic loss of lives in Pahalgam, where 26 Indians were killed in a brutal attack. She described the operation’s codename as not only a symbolic gesture but a fitting tribute to the victims.
Paul stated, “This is not a weak India; this is PM Modi’s strong India. The way ‘sindoor’ was wiped off from the foreheads of so many women, this operation was a befitting answer for that.” She further accused Raj and his party of being the same ones who had failed to take meaningful action in response to previous attacks, such as the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, during the Congress-led government.
The ongoing debate around the codename “Sindoor” has ignited political and ideological divisions, with sharp criticism from BJP leaders, who argue that the operation’s name is a powerful message of retaliation and justice for the victims of the Pahalgam attack.
