A coalition vessel successfully intercepted an anti-ship ballistic missile (ASBM) launched from Iranian-backed Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen over the Gulf of Aden, according to a statement from the US Central Command (USCENTCOM) on Thursday.
The missile, which was likely targeting the MV Yorktown, a US-flagged vessel with American and Greek crew members, was engaged without resulting in any injuries or damage to ships in the vicinity, USCENTCOM confirmed.
In addition to intercepting the ASBM, USCENTCOM reported the successful destruction of four airborne unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) over Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen. These actions were taken in response to imminent threats posed by the ASBM and UAVs to US, coalition, and merchant vessels operating in the region.
The attack on the US ship Maersk Yorktown, alongside an American destroyer in the Gulf of Aden, and the Israeli ship MSC Veracruz in the Indian Ocean, was claimed by Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree in a televised speech on Wednesday.
Houthi militants in Yemen have been targeting ships in the Red Sea region since November, citing solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. The attacks have led to disruptions in global shipping through the Suez Canal, prompting reroutes and increased costs for affected firms.
In response to the escalating threats, the United States and Britain have launched strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen. The incident underscores the ongoing tensions in the region and the need for continued vigilance to ensure the safety and security of maritime activities.
