Shenzhen, China, has surged ahead as the world’s top destination for millionaire growth, according to a recent report by New World Wealth and Henley & Partners. Over the past decade, Shenzhen has seen an astonishing 140% increase in its millionaire count, surpassing other first-tier cities in China like Beijing and Shanghai. This remarkable growth trend continued in 2023, with Shenzhen experiencing a 10% rise in millionaires while other cities faced declines.
Analysts attribute Shenzhen’s success to its vibrant business environment and organic income growth. The city, often referred to as China’s Silicon Valley, has become a hub for startups and is home to global tech giants like Tencent and Huawei. Additionally, Shenzhen’s pro-business regulatory policies have fueled the rise of self-made fortunes, distinguishing it from cities like Shanghai, which rely heavily on state-owned enterprises.
Despite China’s overall economic challenges in recent years, Shenzhen’s economy expanded by 6% in 2023, outpacing growth in Beijing and Shanghai. Its strategic location near Hong Kong has also played a crucial role in its development, enabling access to foreign investment and market-oriented reforms.
Looking ahead, experts predict continued robust growth for Shenzhen, positioning it as one of the most promising cities in Mainland China. With over 50,300 resident millionaires, Shenzhen currently ranks as the 27th wealthiest city globally, but its rapid growth trajectory suggests it could break into the top 10 by 2040.
The success of Shenzhen underscores the importance of maintaining a conducive environment for entrepreneurship. As the city continues to attract wealth and talent, its ability to sustain growth will be critical for its future prosperity.
