The Centre has stepped up rural development and welfare initiatives with the release of ₹17,744 crore as the first instalment under the VB-GRAM G scheme. According to the Ministry of Rural Development, the funds have been transferred directly to states through Direct Benefit Transfer to ensure timely wage payments to labourers. The scheme operates on a demand-driven model, allowing states to access funds based on requirements. Alongside this, the government has reiterated its ambitious target of constructing nearly 4.95 crore houses in rural India under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin, reflecting a continued push toward housing for all.
Rural Housing Push and Welfare Measures
The rural housing programme remains a central pillar of the government’s welfare strategy. Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin, millions of households are expected to benefit from pucca homes equipped with basic amenities. Officials noted that the latest fund release will support ongoing construction activities and generate employment in rural areas.
The Direct Benefit Transfer mechanism ensures that funds reach beneficiaries and workers without delays or leakages. This approach has been instrumental in improving transparency and efficiency in welfare delivery. The government has emphasized that timely payments to labourers will boost rural incomes and sustain economic activity in villages.
The scale of the housing initiative, targeting nearly five crore homes, underscores the government’s focus on improving living conditions in rural India. It is also expected to contribute significantly to job creation in construction and allied sectors.
Energy Supply Expansion and LPG Distribution
The Centre has also intensified efforts to expand access to clean energy. A major push has been made in the production and distribution of 5 kg LPG cylinders, with over 18.45 lakh units sold since March 2026. In addition, more than 1.05 lakh cylinders have been distributed since April 3, indicating rising demand among consumers.
The expansion of Piped Natural Gas connections is another key focus area. According to officials from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, more than four lakh new households have been connected to the PNG network since March 2026. These measures aim to provide affordable and cleaner fuel alternatives to households across the country.
The government has acknowledged that geopolitical tensions in West Asia have impacted the supply of petroleum products, including petrol, diesel, and LPG. Despite these challenges, efforts are being made to ensure uninterrupted supply and expand infrastructure.
Evacuation Efforts and Maritime Security
Amid ongoing tensions in the Gulf region, the government has prioritized the safety of Indian citizens and maritime operations. National Security Adviser Ajit Doval visited Saudi Arabia on April 19, 2026, as part of ongoing diplomatic and security engagements.
Authorities reported that over 11.30 lakh passengers have been flown back to India from Gulf countries since February 2026. On a single day, around 110 flights were scheduled to arrive from the United Arab Emirates, reflecting the scale of evacuation and travel operations. Additionally, 1,091 Indian students have been brought back from Iran through multiple routes.
Maritime safety remains a concern, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route. The government confirmed that ten Indian ships have safely crossed the strait since the onset of regional conflict. However, some vessels remain stranded in the Persian Gulf, and recent incidents involving attacks on ships have highlighted ongoing risks.
Integrated Approach to Development and Crisis Response
The government’s multi-pronged approach combines welfare initiatives, energy expansion, and crisis management. The release of funds under VB-GRAM G, coupled with housing and energy programmes, reflects a broader strategy aimed at strengthening rural infrastructure and economic resilience.
At the same time, proactive evacuation measures and maritime monitoring demonstrate the government’s focus on safeguarding Indian citizens and assets abroad. The coordination between ministries and agencies has been crucial in addressing both domestic development goals and international challenges.
As India navigates a complex global environment, these initiatives are expected to play a key role in sustaining growth, ensuring energy security, and enhancing the quality of life for millions of citizens.
