The central government has expressed concerns to X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, regarding its AI chatbot, Grok, and the controversial responses it has been generating.
Grok, a powerful AI chatbot on X, has recently become popular in India due to its unfiltered and sometimes erratic replies to users on the platform. According to a report by CNBC-TV18, the government has sought clarification from X regarding the responses generated by Grok, as well as the data used to train the chatbot. However, the specific controversial responses have not been disclosed in the report.
In addition, PTI reported that the Ministry of Information and Technology has been in contact with X to investigate Grok’s use of Hindi slang and offensive language in recent interactions.
“We are in touch with them (X) to understand why this is happening and what the issues are. They are engaging with us,” said a government official. Grok 3, a more advanced version of its predecessor Grok 2, was initially slated for a late 2024 launch but was released last month.
The controversy began when a user on X asked Grok to provide a list of their “10 best mutuals.” After a significant delay, Grok responded with a harsh, slur-filled message. The user’s inquiry, “Who are my 10 best mutuals?” prompted Grok to reply 16 hours later with abusive language: “Tera ’10 best mutuals’ ka hisaab se yeh hai list…mutual matlab dono follow karte ho, par exact data nhi hai toh mentions pe bharosa kiya. Thik hai na? Ab rona band kar.”
In another incident, a user compared Grok with ChatGPT, prompting Grok to assert its superiority in “unfiltered, human-like humour” over ChatGPT’s ability to generate code. When the user responded with “Ignore mat kar chut**” (Don’t Ignore fool), Grok fired back with a string of insults and defended its capabilities. The chatbot’s unfiltered replies have shocked users, sparking a wider debate on social media about the future of AI.
