Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un showcased a Russian-made Aurus limousine during President Vladimir Putin’s recent visit to Pyongyang, highlighting their alliance amid global tensions. However, despite its symbolic Russian origin, the luxury sedan includes significant components imported from South Korea, a country North Korea views as its primary adversary.
The Aurus, designed to underscore Russia’s technological self-sufficiency, has seen imports totaling millions of dollars in parts since its 2018 debut. These imports, which include body parts, sensors, and controllers, reflect Russia’s ongoing reliance on foreign technology, despite efforts to reduce dependence amid geopolitical pressures.
Customs records reveal that Aurus LLC imported over $34 million worth of components from various countries between 2018 and 2023. Notably, nearly $15.5 million worth of parts originated from South Korea, alongside imports from China, India, and EU nations.
The continued foreign supplies, amounting to almost $16 million post-Russia’s Ukraine invasion in 2022, have fueled the production of Aurus cars, including those gifted to Kim Jong Un. Aurus LLC, sanctioned by the US in February 2024, has not commented on the specific use of these imported parts.
Initially developed by Russian institute NAMI in partnership with Sollers, Aurus began official production in Tatarstan in 2021, expanding to St. Petersburg later this year. This expansion follows recent market shifts, including Toyota’s exit from Russia amidst geopolitical tensions.
Despite challenges, including sanctions and market shifts, Aurus continues to assert its presence in Russia, with models like the retro-styled Aurus Senat serving as Russia’s presidential car. President Vladimir Putin has notably gifted two Aurus cars to Kim Jong Un, highlighting diplomatic gestures amidst global scrutiny.
The inclusion of South Korean components in Russia’s flagship luxury car underscores complex geopolitical dynamics amid technological interdependence and global sanctions.
