Bangladesh’s interim government has formally requested India to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, sparking a new political and diplomatic debate. The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, confirmed receiving the request, stating that the interim government has sent an official note seeking her extradition. However, New Delhi has yet to respond to the request.

Amidst these developments, Mahesh Sachdev, a former Indian ambassador to Bangladesh, outlined potential strategies Sheikh Hasina could adopt to contest the extradition request. In an interview with ANI, Sachdev emphasized that the former Prime Minister could challenge the request in court and leverage international legal precedents to her advantage.

Sachdev explained that Sheikh Hasina could argue a lack of trust in the interim government and raise concerns about potential mistreatment if extradited. Drawing parallels to past cases, he noted that several European nations have dismissed India’s extradition requests in the past on similar grounds. This could serve as a precedent for Hasina’s defense.

Additionally, Sachdev pointed out that India could decline the extradition request on political grounds, citing it as an internal matter of Bangladesh. He further suggested that India’s refusal could be rooted in the principle of non-interference in domestic political disputes of neighboring nations.

The extradition request adds a new layer of complexity to the diplomatic ties between India and Bangladesh. Sheikh Hasina, a pivotal figure in Bangladeshi politics, has been a subject of intense scrutiny by her political opponents, who see this move as part of a larger political vendetta.

The issue of her extradition has also drawn criticism from Hasina’s supporters, who claim that the interim government is engaging in politically motivated actions to tarnish her image. As the matter escalates, the international community closely watches India’s decision, given its potential implications on regional stability and bilateral relations.

With the extradition request already filed, Sheikh Hasina’s legal team is expected to mount a robust defense in court. The outcome of this case could set a precedent for future extradition cases involving political figures in South Asia.

The next steps by India and Sheikh Hasina will determine the trajectory of this high-profile case, which has significant implications for the political and diplomatic dynamics between the two nations.
