In a landmark decision, the Union Cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the transformation of Ayodhya Airport into an international airport. The airport will now be officially known as the “Maharishi Valmiki International Airport, Ayodhyadham,” paying tribute to the revered sage Maharishi Valmiki, credited with composing the epic Ramayana.
In an official release, the government announced, “Elevating Ayodhya Airport to international status is paramount for realizing Ayodhya’s economic potential and its significance as a global pilgrimage site, opening doors to foreign pilgrims and tourists.” “Ayodhya, with its deep cultural roots is strategically positioned to become a key economic hub and pilgrimage site. The airport’s potential to attract international pilgrims and businesses aligns with the city’s historical prominence,” it added.
Significantly, the inauguration of Ayodhya Airport took place on December 30, 2023, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi presiding over the event. During a public address, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of Maharishi Valmiki’s Ramayana as a source of knowledge and a connection to Shri Ram.
About newly-constructed Ayodhya Airport:
In its initial phase, the airport is designed to handle approximately 10 lakh passengers annually. Upon the completion of the second phase, Maharishi Valmiki International Airport will have the capacity to serve up to 60 lakh passengers each year. The first phase of this state-of-the-art airport was developed at a cost exceeding Rs 1,450 crore.
Furthermore, its architectural facade is adorned with elements reminiscent of the upcoming Shri Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. The interiors of the terminal feature local art, paintings, and murals depicting the life of Bhagwan Shri Ram. Moreover, the airport has been designed with sustainability in mind, incorporating features such as an insulated roofing system, LED lighting, rainwater harvesting, landscaped gardens with fountains, water treatment facilities, a solar power plant, and various other sustainable elements. These efforts aim to achieve a GRIHA 5-star rating for the airport’s environmental performance.
