The body of former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee will be donated to the NRS Medical College and Hospital for research, according to a CPI(M) official. This decision reflects Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s commitment to contributing to medical science, having previously pledged to donate both his eyes and body.
On Thursday, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s mortal remains, draped in the red flag of the CPI(M), were transported from his modest residence at Palm Avenue in south Kolkata to the Peace World mortuary. The departure was marked by a somber yet respectful procession, including his wife, Mira Bhattacharjee, who accompanied the hearse amidst tears, along with party leaders and a diverse array of admirers.
The procession saw significant political and public figures paying their respects. Governor CV Ananda Bose, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Left Front Chairman Biman Bose, and CPI(M) State Secretary Md Salim were among those who visited Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s residence to offer their condolences. Following the initial rites, the body will be taken to the West Bengal Assembly and then to the CPI(M) state headquarters at Muzaffar Ahmed Bhavan, where party leaders and the public can pay their final tributes.
The final public homage will also include a visit to the DYFI, the CPI(M)’s youth wing headquarters. After these ceremonies, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s body will be transferred to NRS Medical College and Hospital for research purposes. This act of generosity underscores Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s enduring legacy and his dedication to contributing to the greater good even beyond his death.
