  • British F-35B jet grounded in Kerala after technical snag.

A British Royal Navy F-35B stealth fighter jet — one of the most advanced and expensive military aircraft in the world — has remained grounded for over 72 hours at Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram International Airport. The emergency landing was carried out on Sunday morning due to low fuel, but subsequent technical issues have prevented the jet from returning to sea operations.

The incident has drawn attention due to the aircraft’s prominence and its association with the UK’s flagship HMS Prince of Wales Carrier Strike Group, which is currently deployed in the Indo-Pacific region following joint military drills with the Indian Navy.

Emergency Landing and Prolonged Stay

The jet, capable of short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL), had to divert its course and land at the Thiruvananthapuram airport after encountering low fuel during operations. While the Indian Air Force termed the diversion a “normal occurrence,” a Royal Navy AW101 Merlin helicopter arrived a day later to fly the pilot back to the carrier, indicating that the jet’s technical problems were more serious than initially expected.

The Indian Air Force confirmed that it is providing logistical support during the grounded jet’s stay, helping ensure the safety and possible repair of the aircraft on Indian soil.

A Symbol of Modern Military Aviation

The F-35B belongs to the Lockheed Martin-designed F-35 programme, which is widely regarded as the most technologically sophisticated and cost-intensive fighter jet project in history. Operated by several countries, the jet features advanced radar-evading design and sensor fusion technology, making it a vital component of modern Western air power.

The B variant — currently used by the British Royal Navy — is uniquely engineered for short take-offs and vertical landings, allowing it to operate from aircraft carriers without catapults. However, this variant has occasionally faced operational issues, particularly with its lift fan system and vertical landing mechanism.

Despite these challenges, the F-35 has seen regular deployment in conflict zones. Notably, the Israeli Air Force has been using its F-35 fleet in precision missions, underlining the platform’s global relevance. The ongoing incident in Kerala serves as a reminder of both the sophistication and the fragility of such cutting-edge military technology.
