Highlights
  • India leverages youth and experience to reshape its global workforce.
  • From seasoned skills to fresh talent, India's workforce transforms.

As India positions itself as a global powerhouse, its young and dynamic workforce emerges as both a strength and a challenge in navigating workforce dynamics. A rapidly evolving landscape in sectors like aerospace, manufacturing, and defense requires both the wisdom of seasoned professionals, termed the “Gray” workforce, and the tech-savvy enthusiasm of the younger “Green” workforce. This shift from gray to green could propel India to a competitive advantage if managed with thoughtful policy and industry support.

Globally, the trend leans toward aging workforces, especially in developed countries like the United States and Europe. In these countries, a significant portion of the workforce—up to 33% in some sectors like aerospace and defense—are over 50 years old, presenting challenges as many of these experienced professionals approach retirement. The loss of skilled workers in technical fields poses a risk to knowledge retention, productivity, and efficiency in crucial sectors.

In contrast, India holds a unique demographic advantage: over 65% of its population is under 35, bringing immense potential for growth. However, this opportunity comes with the challenge of equipping young workers with the necessary skills and experience to perform in specialized roles traditionally held by the gray workforce. India’s potential success lies in bridging this gap through skill development programs, mentorships, and international collaborations.

Successful models from European and U.S. firms, where mentorship programs and flexible career paths retain and cultivate younger talent, serve as potential blueprints for India. Experts suggest that India could introduce similar mentorship initiatives in sectors like defense and aerospace, pairing seasoned professionals with younger workers for effective knowledge transfer.

As India moves forward, it has the chance to become a global leader in industries like defense and aerospace by strategically blending the institutional knowledge of the gray workforce with the innovation and adaptability of its younger generation. Through proactive skill development and collaboration, India can turn its demographic dividend into a sustainable advantage on the world stage.
