  • Attack on Hindu temple by pro-Khalistan group raises tensions.

In Brampton, Canada, the Hindu Sabha temple faced a significant controversy involving its priest, Rajinder Parsad, after his suspension and subsequent reinstatement over a speech delivered during a protest. The incident, which occurred shortly after an alleged attack by a pro-Khalistani group on devotees at the temple premises, has sparked widespread discussion within the Indo-Canadian community and beyond.

On November 3, 2024, a protest erupted at the Hindu Sabha temple in Brampton, where members of the Indian community, joined by individuals from various faiths, gathered to condemn an attack that had taken place at the temple during Diwali celebrations. According to reports, a group supporting the pro-Khalistan movement entered the temple premises, allegedly attacking worshippers with sticks and fists. Social media footage appeared to show attackers waving banners in support of Khalistan, which heightened tensions. Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with pro-Khalistani demonstrators clashing with members of the Indo-Canadian community while carrying flags and disrupting a consular event co-organised by the temple and the Indian Consulate.

The temple’s priest, Rajinder Parsad, addressed the gathering, urging unity among Hindus in the wake of the attack. In his speech, he warned against division with the phrase, “batoge to katoge,” roughly translating to “division will bring annihilation.” The message, delivered in a passionate tone, resonated with some attendees but drew sharp criticism from others, including Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown, who took to social media platform X to denounce the remarks as “violent rhetoric.” Mayor Brown’s comments sparked a larger debate over the freedom of religious leaders to express concerns in response to perceived threats to their community.

In response to the speech, the Hindu Sabha temple’s administration suspended Priest Rajinder Parsad on November 5, two days after his public comments. The temple organisation released a statement from its president, Madhusudan Lama, clarifying that the temple had not authorised Parsad to participate in the protest or to make public statements on its behalf. The statement read, “The Hindu Sabha did not authorise or permit Priest Rajinder Parsad to engage in the activities which recently occurred. The Hindu Sabha had no prior knowledge of his involvement in these activities. Based on preliminary input, Priest Rajinder Parsad was suspended.”

The decision to suspend Parsad was met with mixed reactions, with some in the community questioning the temple’s decision, while others supported the measure as an attempt to maintain neutrality in the face of sensitive political issues. The situation continued to escalate as members of the community voiced their opinions, both in support of and against the priest’s statements.

However, two days after his suspension, on November 7, the Hindu Sabha temple reversed its decision and reinstated Parsad. In a follow-up statement, President Madhusudan Lama explained that after further review, the temple had decided to reinstate the priest, acknowledging the complex and charged environment surrounding the incident. “As a result of further review, we have now reinstated Priest Rajinder Parsad to his duties and responsibilities at Hindu Sabha,” the statement read, without providing specific details on the factors that led to the reversal.

The attack itself has drawn significant concern among Indian nationals in Canada. Following the incident, Peel Police, who were stationed outside the temple during the protests, faced criticism from some community members for what was perceived as a mishandling of the situation and an alleged bias in managing the crowd. Canadian leaders, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, condemned the attack but did not directly address the actions of the pro-Khalistan group, a detail that has left some community members feeling their concerns were inadequately addressed. In India, the Ministry of External Affairs also condemned the attack, urging the Canadian government to ensure the safety and security of Indian nationals and to hold those involved in violent actions accountable.

This incident has further highlighted the longstanding tensions between pro-Khalistan supporters and members of the Indian community in Canada. The involvement of the Hindu Sabha priest in addressing these issues, and the temple’s subsequent handling of the situation, underscores the delicate balance community leaders and religious institutions must navigate amidst complex geopolitical and social dynamics.

As Priest Rajinder Parsad resumes his duties, the Hindu Sabha temple’s decision to reinstate him suggests a willingness to support his efforts to encourage unity in the face of adversity. However, the incident has left a lasting impact, as community members and Canadian authorities continue to grapple with the implications of rising tensions and the need for security and stability within Canada’s diverse multicultural fabric.
