In the realm of Indian politics, image plays a pivotal role, with political leaders often going to great lengths to cultivate an aura of relatability and simplicity. Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, and Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, both rose to prominence by projecting themselves as leaders who were in touch with the common man. However, while Mamata’s humble image has largely been preserved, Arvind Kejriwal’s efforts to maintain a similar persona have come under intense scrutiny, particularly with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) targeting his image in the run-up to the Delhi elections.

Mamata Banerjee, known for her modest lifestyle, became synonymous with simplicity in Indian politics. Even after achieving political power, Mamata maintained her image by wearing crisp cotton sarees, often in white or cream, paired with hawai chappals, and driving a small Maruti car. She made it a point to stay rooted in her old home on Kolkata’s Harish Chatterjee Lane, never letting her rise to power alter her down-to-earth appearance. Despite the heavy charges of corruption and mismanagement leveled against her by the BJP, Mamata’s image remained largely intact. Her ability to present herself as a politician grounded in simplicity, devoid of ostentation, helped her fend off the BJP’s accusations. Even in the face of serious political allegations such as the Narada and Saradha scams, Mamata’s carefully cultivated image shielded her from much of the criticism, and she continued to be seen as a commoner at heart.

Arvind Kejriwal, on the other hand, initially presented himself as the quintessential “Aam Aadmi ka neta” (common man’s leader), donning untucked cotton shirts over trousers, simple footwear, and driving a modest Wagon R car. This image of simplicity and accessibility won him widespread support, particularly from Delhi’s middle-class voters, who saw him as a refreshing alternative to traditional politicians. However, in the eyes of the BJP, this carefully crafted persona of a humble leader has started to unravel.

The BJP has seized on Arvind Kejriwal’s residence, dubbed the “Sheesh Mahal”, as a key point of attack. The CM’s opulent house, complete with luxury furnishings and lavish décor, starkly contrasts with his public image as a leader who is one with the common man. The BJP has been using images of the “Sheesh Mahal” to portray Arvind Kejriwal as a leader who has abandoned his promises of simplicity and transparency. The narrative being built is one of hypocrisy, with the BJP claiming that Arvind Kejriwal’s attempt to project himself as a man of the people is merely an act, and that his lavish lifestyle undermines his credibility as a leader who once vowed to fight against corruption and privilege.

The BJP’s ad campaigns have played a significant role in chipping away at Arvind Kejriwal’s carefully cultivated image. Through a combination of visual evidence and reports, such as the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report, the BJP has been able to portray Arvind Kejriwal as a politician who has strayed far from the ideals he once espoused. The BJP’s portrayal of Arvind Kejriwal as a leader who is no different from the political elite is an attempt to expose what they describe as the “emperor’s new clothes” – a leader who may talk about simplicity and honesty, but whose actions and lifestyle suggest otherwise.

In contrast to Mamata Banerjee’s ability to deflect criticism by staying true to her image, Arvind Kejriwal’s efforts to maintain his image as a humble leader have been less successful. While Mamata faced similar allegations of corruption, her ability to remain grounded and avoid the trappings of power has helped her maintain political credibility. Arvind Kejriwal, however, has struggled to reconcile his public image with his private lifestyle, and this discrepancy has provided ample ammunition for the BJP to attack him.

As the political battle in Delhi intensifies, the BJP is hoping that its strategy of stripping Arvind Kejriwal of his credibility will gain traction among voters. The party’s aim is clear: to undermine Arvind Kejriwal’s carefully constructed image of the “common man’s leader” and expose him as just another politician who has succumbed to the temptations of power. Whether or not this strategy will prove successful remains to be seen, but it is clear that the battle for Delhi is as much about image as it is about policies.

Arvind Kejriwal’s critics argue that his image as a “kattar imaandaar” (staunchly honest) leader has been tarnished by his opulent lifestyle and the contradictions in his persona. The BJP’s efforts to dismantle Arvind Kejriwal’s credibility are a direct response to his growing political influence, especially as he prepares for the upcoming Delhi elections. As the BJP continues to build its narrative around Arvind Kejriwal’s lifestyle, the question remains whether the people of Delhi will buy into this portrayal or continue to support a leader they see as a representative of the common man.

The BJP’s efforts to target Arvind Kejriwal’s image highlight the growing importance of political personas in contemporary Indian politics. While Mamata Banerjee has successfully shielded herself from similar attacks, Arvind Kejriwal’s image appears to be increasingly vulnerable to scrutiny. As the Delhi elections draw near, the battle for perception will likely play a crucial role in determining the political future of both Arvind Kejriwal and the BJP.
