Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s recent comment alleging that Prime Minister Narendra Modi “surrendered” after a phone call from former US President Donald Trump during the India-Pakistan military tension has sparked fierce backlash from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). BJP leaders have strongly condemned Gandhi’s statement as disrespectful to the Prime Minister and the Indian Army, accusing the Congress party of undermining national pride and security. The controversy highlights the ongoing political battle around the interpretation of recent military and electoral events.
BJP Denounces Rahul Gandhi’s Allegations
BJP spokesperson and Rajya Sabha MP Sudhanshu Trivedi criticized Rahul Gandhi’s remarks during a press conference, calling them “irresponsible” and “distorted.” He questioned Gandhi’s logic, highlighting the irony of considering a third consecutive election victory for Modi as a defeat while viewing his own electoral performance as a success. Trivedi asserted that Gandhi’s use of the term “surrender” to describe Modi’s actions is a grave insult to the Indian Army—language that, according to him, even Pakistan-backed terrorists or infamous figures like Masood Azhar and Hafiz Saeed have not used.
Trivedi also reflected on historical instances where, in his view, the Nehru-Gandhi family had shown signs of yielding in matters of national security, further reinforcing his criticism of Congress. He praised Prime Minister Modi as the “lion of mother India,” positioning him as a strong and fearless leader defending the country.
Congress Leaders Double Down on Criticism
Meanwhile, Congress leader Pawan Khera intensified the attack on PM Modi by coining the phrase “Naam Narender, Kaam surrender” to imply that Modi’s name is well-known but his actions show weakness. Khera pointed to the BJP’s history, which he described as one marked by cowardice, warning that the nation’s future could be at risk under such leadership.
He also highlighted US President Trump’s claims that trade threats helped secure a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, questioning why Prime Minister Modi has remained silent on these assertions over recent weeks. This added a layer of international dimension to the political debate.
The exchange underscores the deep political divisions in India, where military conflicts and electoral results continue to be hotly contested topics, with parties leveraging such issues to challenge opponents’ credibility and leadership.
