The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly criticized the Telangana government over restrictions imposed on Holi celebrations by the Hyderabad and Cyberabad police. The party has accused the state government of having an “anti-Hindu” stance after authorities banned group rides and imposed limits on alcohol sales during the festival.
BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla condemned the move, stating that the Congress-led Telangana government was curbing the religious freedom of Hindus. “Once again, the anti-Hindu agenda of the Telangana government is exposed. Now, they are imposing unnecessary restrictions on Holi celebrations, dictating how Hindus should observe their festival,” Poonawalla said in a sharp rebuke.
Restrictions on Holi Festivities
The Rachakonda Police Commissionerate, under the jurisdiction of Commissioner G Sudheer Babu, issued an order announcing the closure of liquor outlets on March 14 from 6 am to 6 pm. According to the directive, all wine shops, toddy shops, and bars attached to restaurants within the Rachakonda Police Commissionerate limits will remain shut. However, an exception has been made for licensed establishments inside star hotels and registered clubs.
In addition to liquor restrictions, Cyberabad Police Commissioner Avinash Mohanty issued a separate order outlining guidelines for public celebrations. The directive warns against throwing colors or water on strangers, vehicles, or public places. Additionally, it discourages individuals from smearing colors on others in a way that could cause discomfort or conflict.
Another key restriction prohibits groups from riding motorcycles or other vehicles aimlessly through the streets, an act police say could create public inconvenience. These regulations will be in effect from 6 am on March 14 until 6 am on March 15.
Political Outrage and Public Reactions
The BJP has alleged that such restrictions unfairly target Hindu festivals while other religious celebrations are allowed greater freedom. Party leaders argue that these measures amount to selective policing and reflect the Telangana government’s alleged bias against Hindus.
Supporters of the restrictions, however, contend that they are aimed at maintaining public order and preventing incidents that could lead to accidents or conflicts. Law enforcement authorities have justified their decision, citing past instances of disturbances during Holi celebrations.
Despite the explanations, the issue has sparked a political debate, with BJP leaders vowing to challenge what they call “discriminatory” policies against Hindu traditions. The controversy adds to the ongoing political friction between the BJP and the Congress-led Telangana government, as both parties gear up for future electoral battles.
