Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament (MP) Mahesh Sharma ignited a contentious debate with his recent remarks, suggesting that individuals who do not consider Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath as their own are akin to traitors.
Addressing an election rally in Bulandshahr just days before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Sharma asserted, “Those who do not consider Modi and Yogi as their own, will not consider even their father as their own. If anyone says he is your own more than Modi-Yogi, then he is a traitor to this country. The person does not want the welfare of the country or the state.”
While Sharma’s comments did not specify any particular community, reports indicate that they were perceived as directed towards a specific group in western Uttar Pradesh. Initially shared by a news agency on April 12, a video of Sharma’s speech gained traction on social media platforms, drawing widespread attention.
Responding to the controversy, Indian Youth Congress president Srinivas BV shared the video on X and urged the Election Commission to intervene. He questioned the Election Commission’s impartiality, calling for action in light of Sharma’s remarks.
“Dear Election Commission, the time has come to decide who are you with? If you are unbiased then take action, otherwise as per Mahesh Sharma you are with Modi,” Srinivas BV remarked, highlighting the contentious nature of Sharma’s statement.
