The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is moving towards a significant organisational change, with sources indicating that the party may appoint its first-ever woman national president. This development comes as the BJP, after appointing state chiefs in several states and Union territories, is now focused on selecting a new national president following JP Nadda, whose term was extended until 2024 to steer the party through the Lok Sabha elections.
Key Names in the Race for BJP President
Among the prominent names under consideration is Nirmala Sitharaman, who has been serving as the Finance Minister since 2019 and is regarded as one of the most influential women leaders within the party. Her connection to Tamil Nadu could aid the BJP’s efforts to expand its influence in southern India. Her recent meetings with JP Nadda and BJP General Secretary BL Santhosh at the party headquarters have further strengthened speculation around her potential elevation.
Another key contender is D Purandeswari, who previously served as the BJP’s Andhra Pradesh unit chief and has represented the government abroad as part of the Operation Sindoor delegation, advocating India’s anti-terrorism stance in countries including the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Denmark, and the EU. Her experience within the party and the central leadership positions her as a strong candidate for the role.
Vanathi Srinivasan and BJP’s Strategic Focus on Women Leaders
Vanathi Srinivasan is also among the names being considered for the top post. She has previously served as the BJP Mahila Morcha National President and has been associated with the party since 1993. Her notable victory in the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections from Coimbatore (South), where she defeated actor and MNM founder Kamal Haasan, reflects her grassroots connect and political strength. In 2022, she became a member of the BJP’s Central Election Committee, underlining her rising stature within the party.
The BJP’s interest in appointing a woman president aligns with its growing focus on consolidating its women voter base, which has shown increasing support for the party in recent elections. This strategic focus is also reflected in the BJP’s push for the women’s reservation bill in 2023, which was successfully passed in both houses of Parliament, ensuring 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies.
By appointing a woman as its national president, the BJP could further align itself with its commitment to women’s representation in leadership roles, signalling a significant step in the party’s evolving organisational structure while preparing for future electoral challenges and expanding its voter base.
