Independent MP Rajesh Ranjan, known as Pappu Yadav, made a bold statement during his oath-taking ceremony in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday by wearing a T-shirt prominently displaying “#reneet.”
Ranjan, representing Bihar’s Purnia constituency, commenced his oath with a spirited “Bihar zindabad” and concluded with vocal demands for a re-examination of NEET-UG and special category status for Bihar.
His vocal support for NEET-UG re-examination and Bihar’s special status sparked objections from members of the treasury benches. Undeterred, Ranjan, a six-time MP, defended his stance robustly, asserting his independence and electoral track record. “You win due to blessings, I contest alone … I have won four times as an Independent, you don’t tell me,” he asserted from the podium.
Addressing the House, Pro-tem Speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab noted the lingering “election fever,” observing that members were deviating from procedural norms by extending their remarks beyond the oath or affirmation.
Later speaking to reporters, Ranjan criticized the House for focusing on personal glorification rather than critical issues such as NEET and Bihar’s special status. “There was no discussion on NEET, on special status for Bihar. That is why I said re-NEET and special status,” he emphasized.
The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET-UG), crucial for admissions to MBBS/BDS and other medical courses, has faced scrutiny over alleged irregularities in its administration.
This incident underscores Pappu Yadav’s commitment to advocacy and highlights ongoing legislative priorities amidst parliamentary proceedings.
