  • Biden shares uncle's WWII plane crash in "cannibal" zone.
  • Criticizes Trump's reported remarks on fallen soldiers, citing son Beau.

During a visit to a war memorial in his hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania, President Joe Biden shared a poignant tale about his uncle, Ambrose Finnegan, whose plane was shot down during World War II in an area he described as “having a lot of cannibals.”

Biden, 81, reflected on Finnegan’s service in the military, recalling his volunteer work flying single-engine planes on reconnaissance missions over New Guinea. “He got shot down in an area where there were a lot of cannibals in New Guinea at the time,” Biden recounted to reporters, placing his hand on his uncle’s engraved name at the memorial.

The president explained that despite efforts to locate Finnegan’s body, it was never recovered. However, during Biden’s visit to the area, government officials discovered some parts of the plane.

According to information from the Pentagon’s Defence POW/MIA Accounting Agency, Finnegan’s plane crashed into the ocean off the north coast of New Guinea on May 14, 1944, under circumstances described as “unknown.” Three crew members were lost in the crash, while one survived and was rescued.

Ambrose Finnegan, a member of the US Army Air Forces from Pennsylvania, remains officially listed as missing in action, with his remains still unaccounted for.

In Pittsburgh, Biden reiterated his uncle’s story while criticizing former President Donald Trump for alleged remarks disparaging fallen US troops. Referring to Trump’s reported comments about military veterans, Biden expressed emotional disapproval, particularly in light of his own son Beau’s service in the US Army.

The president referenced Trump’s purported refusal to attend a military ceremony near Paris in 2018, a claim stemming from a controversial article in The Atlantic. The article alleged that Trump cited inclement weather as the reason for his absence, prompting a heated response from Biden.

Trump’s alleged remarks, including labeling fallen soldiers as “suckers” and “losers,” have stirred significant controversy, with Biden vehemently denouncing such sentiments.
