In a legal showdown between the Australian government and social media giant X, an Australian court has issued an injunction demanding the platform to conceal certain posts related to the recent stabbing incident involving an Assyrian church bishop in Sydney. The decision has intensified tensions between X’s owner, Elon Musk, and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
Late on Monday, Australia’s federal court granted a two-day injunction sought by the country’s cyber regulator, the eSafety commissioner, requiring X to hide specific posts discussing the knife attack against Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel. The incident occurred during a church service and prompted widespread concern.
Prime Minister Albanese swiftly criticized Elon Musk, branding him an “arrogant billionaire” for resisting the Australian government’s directives to remove the contentious content. X had initially restricted access to the content for its users within Australia but declined to do so globally, asserting its autonomy over content distribution.
Videos circulating online depicted the assailant, subdued by members of the congregation, berating the bishop over perceived insults to Islam. A 16-year-old has since been charged with a terrorism offense in connection with the attack.
In response to the regulator’s request, Judge Geoffrey Kennett ordered X to block access to the specified posts until Wednesday afternoon, pending further review. Albanese emphasized the importance of social media platforms exercising responsibility, accusing Elon Musk of prioritizing the retention of violent content over community well-being.
Elon Musk, in turn, referred to the eSafety commissioner as the “Australian censorship commissar,” prompting criticism from Albanese. Prior to the Prime Minister’s remarks, Elon Musk posted an image on X depicting the platform as a champion of free speech and truth, contrasting it with other platforms allegedly driven by censorship and propaganda.
The clash underscores broader debates surrounding online content moderation and the responsibilities of tech companies in regulating harmful content. It highlights the challenges faced by governments in reconciling concerns over freedom of expression with efforts to safeguard public safety and well-being in the digital age.
