In response to renewed violence in Manipur’s Jiribam district, Assam has escalated security measures along its interstate border, particularly in the Lakhipur area of Cachar district. The recent unrest in Manipur has prompted hundreds to seek refuge in neighbouring Assam, amid ongoing ethnic tensions dating back to May 3 of last year.
The latest surge in violence stemmed from the discovery of the body of Soibam Saratkumar Singh, a 59-year-old Meitei farmer who had been missing for weeks. His death ignited local outrage, leading to demands for self-defense rights and the imposition of a district-wide curfew by the Jiribam District Magistrate.
Approximately 600 individuals from diverse ethnic backgrounds have fled to Lakhipur in Cachar district, seeking shelter with relatives to escape the violence in Manipur. Assam Police has responded by deploying special commando units along the Assam-Manipur border and initiating regular patrols to maintain order and reassure the local population.
Numal Mahatta, Superintendent of Police in Cachar, emphasized the collaborative efforts between law enforcement and the community in ensuring peace and security. He underscored the importance of proper documentation for those seeking shelter in Assam and affirmed the commitment to take legal action against any attempts to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere.
Meanwhile, the situation in Jiribam remains tense, with authorities continuing efforts to manage the unrest and prevent further escalation. The curfew, imposed since June 6, remains in effect as authorities work towards stabilizing the region and averting further violence.
