In the wake of a devastating terrorist attack that claimed around 28 lives in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi arrived in Srinagar today to assess the security situation and oversee response strategies. The attack, which targeted tourists in the scenic Baisaran Valley, has prompted a nationwide outcry and intensified scrutiny of regional security protocols.
Security Forces Intensify Operations in Bandipora
Earlier today, security forces conducted a cordon and search operation in Kulnar Bazipora, Bandipora district, acting on intelligence reports about terrorist presence. During the operation, an overground worker affiliated with a terrorist group was killed in an encounter. This action underscores the heightened alertness and proactive measures being undertaken by security agencies in the region.
High-Level Visits and Strategic Reviews
General Dwivedi’s visit follows a series of high-level engagements by government officials aimed at reviewing and strengthening security measures in Jammu and Kashmir. Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently visited Baisaran meadow, the site of the attack, to assess the situation firsthand and meet with local authorities and victims’ families. Additionally, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security to evaluate the national response and coordinate efforts across various agencies.
The Pahalgam attack, claimed by The Resistance Front, an offshoot of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, has been identified as one of the deadliest in the region since 2008. The attackers, equipped with automatic weapons, targeted tourists in a calculated assault that has raised serious concerns about the security infrastructure in place, especially in tourist-heavy areas.
Reinforcing Security Infrastructure
In response to the attack, the central government is considering the permanent deployment of Army and paramilitary forces in vulnerable areas to plug existing security gaps. Officials have acknowledged that certain regions, including the Baisaran Valley, lacked immediate security presence, which may have contributed to the attackers’ ability to execute the assault. Plans are underway to realign troop deployments to ensure quicker response times and enhanced protection for civilians, particularly with the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, which attracts a significant number of pilgrims through routes passing near Pahalgam.
