Malayalam actor Anjali Ameer has recently spoken out about a troubling incident involving her co-star Suraj Venjaramoodu, highlighting concerns of inappropriate behavior on film sets. Anjali, a transwoman known for her role alongside Mammootty in the Tamil film “Peranbu,” recalled an uncomfortable question Suraj Venjaramoodu posed regarding the experiences of pleasure among transgender individuals.
In an interview, Anjali Ameer detailed how Suraj Venjaramoodu’s question about whether transgender people experience pleasure in the same way as women affected her deeply. She described feeling angered by the query, which she deemed inappropriate and invasive. Despite her strength, the question struck a nerve, prompting her to report the incident to Mammootty and the film’s director. Following this, Suraj Venjaramoodu issued an apology and refrained from making similar remarks, which Anjali Ameer acknowledged and appreciated.
The incident comes in the wake of the Hema Committee report, which has brought to light extensive issues of sexual harassment, sexual abuse, casting couch practices, pay disparities, and lobbying within the Malayalam film industry. This report has sparked a significant response, with many actors and industry professionals coming forward with their own allegations, giving rise to a robust #MeToo movement within the region’s film circles.
Anjali Ameer expressed her belief that while the majority of industry professionals are respectful, there remains a segment that engages in unacceptable behavior. She pointed out that her personal approach of maintaining professional boundaries, avoiding after-parties, and remaining reserved has shielded her from such advances.
The fallout from the Hema Committee report has been significant, with notable figures like veteran actor Siddique and filmmaker Ranjith resigning from their posts following allegations of sexual misconduct. Numerous actors have been implicated by their female co-stars, indicating a broader issue within the industry. Despite the escalating scandal, major figures such as Mammootty and Mohanlal have yet to publicly address the report or the subsequent allegations.
Anjali Ameer’s revelations add to the growing discourse on the need for systemic change in the Malayalam film industry, underscoring the importance of addressing and rectifying the systemic issues of harassment and discrimination that have long plagued the sector.
