Krishna Kumari Rai, recently elected as MLA from Namchi Singhithang constituency in Sikkim, tendered her resignation just a day after taking oath, citing a decision made by the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM), the ruling party led by her husband, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang.
The SKM secured a resounding victory in the recent Assembly elections, clinching 31 out of 32 seats alongside the lone Lok Sabha seat in the state.
Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang addressed the development, attributing his wife’s resignation to a unanimous decision by the party aimed at prioritizing its welfare and goals. He expressed gratitude for her participation in the electoral process, emphasizing that the decision was made in alignment with the SKM’s parliamentary committee.
In her official statement, Krishna Kumari Rai conveyed a sense of heaviness in her decision to resign, expressing unexpected gratitude for the overwhelming support she received. She acknowledged her entry into electoral politics as a result of the party’s directive and the decisions of its leadership.
“I view politics as a social endeavor, and I contested the elections out of respect for the directives of the parliamentary board and the party president,” Krishna Kumari Rai stated, underscoring her commitment to the SKM’s objectives.
Assuring constituents of Namchi-Singithang, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang assured that they will continue to be represented by a dedicated MLA committed to serving their interests. He affirmed the party’s commitment to providing opportunities to sincere and dedicated party members.
The resignation of Krishna Kumari Rai opens the path for a new candidate from the Namchi-Singithang constituency, who the SKM promises will be equally dedicated to fulfilling the needs of the assembly segment’s residents.
The decision comes amid SKM’s consolidation of power in Sikkim’s political landscape, marking a significant move in its governance strategy following electoral success.
