Amritpal Singh, the leader of separatist group “Waris Punjab De,” currently incarcerated in Assam’s Dibrugarh Jail, has approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court. He seeks temporary release to file his nomination for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. Singh intends to run as an independent candidate from Punjab’s Sri Khadoor Sahib constituency, scheduled for voting on June 1.
In his plea, Amritpal Singh requests a 7-day release to meet the nomination deadline of May 14. He also seeks directives for jail authorities to assist in completing paperwork, including photographing and opening a bank account. The petition asserts Amritpal Singh’s eligibility as an Indian citizen and a voter from the Khadoor Sahib Constituency.
Amritpal Singh’s father, Tarsem Singh, has corresponded with Punjab’s Chief Electoral Officer and Amritsar’s District Magistrate, seeking guidance for his son’s nomination process. However, Amritpal Singh alleges deliberate delays by Punjab authorities, hindering his nomination filing.
Arrested in April last year and detained under the National Security Act (NSA), Amritpal Singh’s imprisonment stems from a clash between his supporters and Punjab police in Ajnala. His followers protested the detention of one of Amritpal Singh’s aides, culminating in a confrontation at a local police station.
Known for his association with the Khalistani movement, Amritpal Singh draws parallels to militant leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. His arrest in Moga followed an extensive evasion attempt, involving vehicle changes and disguises, over a month-long pursuit by law enforcement.
