Amit Panghal, distinguished by his World Championships silver medal, has been enlisted into India’s squad for the forthcoming final Olympic qualifiers, scheduled to be held in Bangkok from May 25 to June 2. This decision comes as the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) announces six alterations to the team composition. The reshuffling follows a lackluster performance by Indian boxers in the previous Olympic qualifying event, where they failed to secure quota places, leading to the resignation of High Performance Director Bernard Dunne.
In the recent evaluation overseen by foreign coaches Dmitry Dmitruk, CA Kuttappa, and Dharmendra Yadav, notable exclusions from the squad include 2023 World Championships bronze medallists Deepak Bhoria (51kg) and Mohammad Hussamudin (57kg), seasoned campaigner Shiva Thapa (63.5kg), and reigning national champion Lakshya Chahar (80kg).
Despite previous assessments placing him behind Bhoria, Amit Panghal’s impressive track record, including gold medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the 2024 Strandja Memorial, has warranted his inclusion. Consequently, Panghal missed out on opportunities in the Asian Games and the initial World Olympic Qualifiers.
In the women’s category, a notable shift sees Ankushita Boro transition from the 66kg to the 60kg weight class, displacing CWG bronze medallist Jaismine Lamboria. Meanwhile, national champion Arundhati Choudhary has emerged as the top performer in the 66kg weight class.
India has secured four quota places for the 2024 Olympics thus far, with Nikhat Zareen (50kg), Preeti Pawar (54kg), Parveen Hooda (57kg), and Lovlina Borgohain (75kg) securing their berths at the Asian Games last year.
During the Tokyo Olympics, India was represented by nine boxers.
The revised squad for the final Olympic qualifiers is as follows:
Men: Amit Panghal (51kg), Sachin Siwach Jr. (57kg), Abhinash Jamwal (63.5kg), Nishant Dev (71kg), Abhimanyu Loura (80kg), Sanjeet (92kg), Narender Berwal (+92kg)
