  • Old defund police post resurfaces amid emotional community reactions

Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani’s recent visit to the family of slain NYPD officer Didarul Islam has drawn both emotional praise and political backlash, reopening old wounds related to his earlier stance on police defunding. As he returned from his wedding abroad, Zohran Mamdani went directly to the officer’s home, where his heartfelt gesture was overshadowed by resurfaced criticism from his 2020 call to “defund the NYPD.”

Zohran Mamdani, who has often found himself at the intersection of progressive activism and political controversy, became the center of a heated debate after he publicly paid tribute to Officer Didarul Islam, one of four victims in the recent Midtown Manhattan mass shooting. Zohran Mamdani, who had just returned from Uganda where he got married, posted on social media that he went straight from the airport to meet the grieving family.

“I landed back in New York City this morning and went directly to the home of Officer Islam, where I met with members of his family, young and old who are heartbroken over the loss of their son, of their brother, their father, their husband, their friend. Heartbroken in a way that words cannot fully describe,” Zohran Mamdani said. He described the time spent with the family as deeply moving and unforgettable, emphasizing that they insisted he stay and share a meal with them.

The visit and his subsequent tribute post, however, immediately reignited scrutiny over Zohran Mamdani’s previous political messaging. Critics began reposting a 2020 tweet in which he had endorsed the call to “defund the NYPD,” part of a broader progressive movement that gained traction during the protests following the killing of George Floyd.

Old Tweets Resurface, Stirring Controversy

Zohran Mamdani’s gesture, which many saw as an attempt to show solidarity and compassion, quickly became the target of scathing criticism on social media. Opponents labeled him a hypocrite, questioning the sincerity of his condolences in light of his earlier stance on policing.

One user accused him of political opportunism, writing, “Zohran Mamdani exposed as a total fraud. Mocking cops, calling them racist, then acting like he cares? No loyalty to America. He belongs in Uganda, not leading NYC. Deport him and protect our city!”

Another shared a screenshot of Zohran Mamdani’s 2020 post featuring the hashtag “#DefundTheNYPD” with the caption: “And now you want to pretend like you support cops?”

A third person commented, “Just think what would have happened if you would have defunded the Police like you wanted.”

While the online vitriol continued, Zohran Mamdani did not directly respond to the backlash, focusing instead on honoring the memory of the victims.

His original post read, “Two days ago, an act of senseless violence took the lives of Officer Didarul Islam, Wesley LePatner, Aland Etienne, and Julia Hyman. Today, I visited Officer Islam’s family and learned of his legacy. I ask you to join me in honoring the memory of these four New Yorkers.”

The victims of the Midtown Manhattan shooting included a diverse group of individuals: Wesley LePatner, an executive at Blackstone; Aland Etienne, a father and security officer; and Julia Hyman, a Cornell graduate who worked at Rudin Management. The tragic incident sent shockwaves through the city and prompted mourning across communities.

Balancing Advocacy and Leadership

Zohran Mamdani’s visit, though personal and sincere in intent, came at a politically delicate time. As a leading progressive voice, Zohran Mamdani has long been associated with calls for reimagining public safety and reallocating police budgets toward community-based alternatives. In 2020, like many progressives nationwide, he supported the call to “defund the police,” a slogan that remains divisive and often misinterpreted as a call to abolish policing entirely.

Now, as a Democratic nominee in a city rocked by gun violence, Zohran Mamdani finds himself navigating the difficult space between progressive ideals and the practical responsibilities of leadership. His outreach to the bereaved family of an NYPD officer signifies an attempt to strike that balance—one that some see as genuine and others view with skepticism.

His defenders argue that it is possible for a politician to both criticize systemic issues within the police force and show compassion for officers and their families who suffer tragic losses. They point out that “defund” does not necessarily mean opposition to individual officers but is rather a critique of policing models that fail to prevent violence and support communities.

Still, the resurfacing of his old tweet at such a sensitive moment has put Zohran Mamdani on the defensive, albeit indirectly. The timing of his visit, coming immediately after his return from Uganda, was meant to express solidarity but instead became a political flashpoint.

Photos published by the New York Post showed Zohran Mamdani outside Officer Islam’s home, holding flowers and embracing grieving relatives. These images, intended to capture a moment of unity and empathy, have been used both to praise and attack the candidate.

In a statement to reporters, Zohran Mamdani elaborated on his visit, saying, “They welcomed me into their home. They refused to let me leave until I had breakfast with them. They are an embodiment of so much of what makes this city the one that we love.”

As Zohran Mamdani moves forward in his campaign, the incident highlights the complex and often contradictory terrain that public officials must navigate—especially those who come from activist backgrounds. His ability to reconcile past positions with present responsibilities will likely determine how voters perceive his readiness to lead a city still grappling with questions of safety, justice, and trust in law enforcement.
