In a brutal episode highlighting the escalating sectarian violence in Syria, an American citizen from Oklahoma, Hosam Saraya, was among eight Druze family members executed during a targeted attack in the country’s Suwayda province last week. This tragic killing underscores the severe human toll of ongoing unrest as the Druze community grapples with rising tensions against Bedouin tribes amid Syria’s fragile ceasefires and attempts at de-escalation.
Hosam Saraya, 35, who had returned to Syria from Oklahoma to care for his ailing father, was executed alongside his brother Kareem and other male family members. The attack, captured in a video that circulated widely on social media, showed armed men in military uniforms and face coverings shooting the captives while shouting religious slogans. According to a US relative, who spoke on condition of anonymity for safety, the massacre has left only the women and children of the family alive, with the men being forcibly taken, lined up, and killed.
A Family Torn Apart Amid Sectarian Violence
The killings took place on July 17 during a surge in violence between Syrian Druze groups and Bedouin tribes in the predominantly Druze Suwayda region. The family’s ordeal began when militants stormed their multi-story home early in the morning, prompting the family to resist until one member was wounded, after which the others surrendered. Survivors later recounted how the armed men forcibly removed the male family members while leaving the women and children inside.
Bahaa Imad, a 20-year-old family friend, confirmed witnessing the militants dragging eight men from the home, identifying them later in a circulated video. One of the family members managed to send a final message to friends, saying, “Come and help us if you can. They surrounded us,” before they were marched 200 meters to Tishreen Square and executed. A female survivor had earlier messaged a US relative, pleading, “Pray for us, they kidnapped the boys, they shot the house, they stole stuff,” capturing the immediate horror faced by the family.
International Response and Community Grief
The US State Department confirmed the death of an American citizen in Suwayda, stating it is “greatly concerned whenever a US citizen is harmed overseas” and called for accountability in such cases. Oklahoma Senators James Lankford and Markwayne Mullin acknowledged the death, offering condolences and pledging to seek further information regarding the tragic event. Lankford described Saraya as an Oklahoman and a member of the Druze community who was “tragically executed alongside other members of his family in Syria.”
The violence that erupted on July 13 has led to widespread bloodshed in southern Syria, marking one of the deadliest escalations since the toppling of Bashar al-Assad’s authoritarian regime by Islamist rebel groups. The clashes prompted Israeli intervention in support of the Druze community and drew condemnation from the US while sparking international diplomatic efforts to prevent further deterioration of the conflict.
Efforts towards stabilisation saw the Syrian government announce a ceasefire agreement with Druze and Bedouin factions in Suwayda over the weekend, while a separate ceasefire between Syria and Israel was also announced, with the US, Turkey, Jordan, and other neighbouring countries supporting the truce to prevent the violence from spiralling further. The execution of the Saraya family members has cast a dark shadow over these fragile peace efforts, leaving a grieving community calling for justice while struggling to cope with the trauma of losing loved ones in such a brutal manner.
