The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has directed the central government to submit a detailed report by March 24 regarding the proceedings in Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship controversy. The court inquired about the action taken on the representation filed by the petitioner concerning Gandhi’s alleged dual citizenship.
During the hearing, the Ministry of Home Affairs informed the court that they have written to the UK government seeking clarification on the matter. The ministry further stated that they require eight weeks to make a final decision on whether Gandhi’s Indian citizenship should be revoked. The court has scheduled the next hearing for March 24.
The directive came in response to a petition filed by Karnataka-based social activist S. Vignesh Shishir, who requested a CBI inquiry into Gandhi’s alleged British citizenship. The petitioner cited documents purportedly listing Gandhi as a British citizen in connection with a company he was associated with in the UK.
The controversy, which has resurfaced multiple times in the political arena, questions the validity of Gandhi’s Indian citizenship. The government is expected to provide a comprehensive response during the next hearing, outlining any evidence or updates regarding the matter.
The case has drawn significant political attention, with critics accusing Gandhi of maintaining dual citizenship, a violation of Indian law. Congress has dismissed these allegations, calling them baseless and politically motivated.
As the matter progresses, the court’s directive to the central government highlights the need for a clear resolution to this politically sensitive issue.
