The announcement of a film adaptation of the popular web series Mirzapur has generated immense excitement among fans, and now, actor Ali Fazal has shared some intriguing details about the upcoming project. Although Fazal did not directly confirm whether the film will be a prequel, he dropped a major hint by mentioning the presence of “some dead people walking,” fueling speculation about the storyline.
Ali Fazal, who plays the iconic role of Guddu Pandit in Mirzapur, recently participated in a roundtable discussion with The Hollywood Reporter India, where he gave an update on the highly anticipated film. The actor expressed his enthusiasm about the project, revealing that the original cast would be returning for the film. “We are very excited. It is the OG cast and we are going back in time. It has to be back in time because there are like some dead people walking,” he said, hinting at a plot that might explore the past events of Mirzapur. This statement further fueled the speculation that the film could be a prequel to the original series.
When asked directly if the film was a prequel, Fazal remained tight-lipped, stating, “You will find out. But we are really excited to bring it to the theatres. Peaky Blinders also did that. It wasn’t like a one-off or an odd choice of move.” This cryptic response has left fans eagerly guessing about the nature of the film’s narrative.
The Mirzapur film is set to release in 2026 and is expected to bring back the central characters from the web series. Along with Ali Fazal, Pankaj Tripathi, who portrays the ruthless Kaleen Bhaiya, and Divyenndu, who plays the infamous Munna Tripathi, will reprise their roles. Additionally, Abhishek Banerjee, known for his portrayal of the compounder in the series, will also return.
Created by Puneet Krishna and directed by Gurmmeet Singh, the Mirzapur film is set to hit the big screen first before making its way to Prime Video India for streaming. Produced by Excel Entertainment, the film promises to bring more of the intense crime thriller elements that have made the series so popular.
The Mirzapur series first debuted in November 2018, followed by a second season in October 2020, and a third season was released in July 2024. Fans can expect the upcoming film to continue the gripping narrative that has made Mirzapur a cultural phenomenon.
