The resignation of Air India CEO Campbell Wilson has triggered a major shake-up in India’s aviation sector, coming in the aftermath of the devastating Ahmedabad plane crash and increasing regulatory scrutiny. The development marks a critical moment for the Tata-owned airline, which has been grappling with financial losses, operational challenges, and mounting pressure to restore public trust following one of the deadliest aviation disasters in recent years.

Air India confirmed that Campbell Wilson has stepped down from his role as chief executive officer and managing director, a decision that comes amid intense scrutiny following the 2025 Ahmedabad crash that claimed around 260 lives. The crash not only shook the aviation industry but also raised serious concerns about safety oversight, crisis management, and accountability within one of India’s most prominent airlines.

The Ahmedabad tragedy, involving a Boeing 787 Dreamliner operating as Air India Flight 171, occurred shortly after takeoff and resulted in catastrophic loss of life. Investigations into the incident have pointed toward complex factors, including possible operational lapses, while ruling out mechanical failure in early findings. The final report is still awaited, keeping critical questions unanswered and prolonging uncertainty for both the airline and the victims’ families.

Mounting pressure from crash fallout and financial instability

The resignation comes at a time when Air India is facing a combination of financial strain and regulatory pressure. Despite efforts to revive the airline after its privatization under the Tata Group, the carrier has struggled to achieve a stable turnaround. Reports indicate significant financial losses in recent years, alongside operational disruptions and external challenges such as geopolitical tensions affecting flight routes.

The Ahmedabad crash significantly intensified scrutiny from regulators and the public. Authorities have been closely monitoring safety compliance, while families of victims have demanded transparency, including access to black box data to understand the exact cause of the disaster. The emotional and political impact of the tragedy continues to linger, placing additional pressure on the airline’s leadership.

Campbell Wilson, who took over as CEO in 2022, was initially tasked with leading Air India’s transformation into a modern, competitive global airline. During his tenure, the airline undertook fleet expansion, operational restructuring, and service improvements. However, the scale of challenges, including the aftermath of the crash, proved to be a major test of leadership.

His resignation, though reportedly planned earlier, has gained greater significance in the current context. He will continue in his role during a transition period until a successor is appointed, ensuring continuity in leadership during a sensitive phase for the airline.

leadership vacuum and the uncertain road ahead

The departure of the CEO creates a leadership vacuum at a time when Air India needs strong direction to rebuild credibility and stabilize operations. The airline’s board has initiated the process of finding a successor, signaling the urgency of restoring confidence among passengers, regulators, and stakeholders.

The aviation sector in India is also undergoing broader changes, with increased competition and evolving regulatory expectations. The resignation coincides with leadership shifts in rival airlines, highlighting a period of transition and uncertainty across the industry.

At the heart of the crisis remains the unresolved questions surrounding the Ahmedabad crash. Preliminary findings suggesting that the aircraft had no mechanical issues have shifted focus toward human or procedural factors, further complicating the narrative. This has intensified calls for stricter safety protocols, better training, and more robust oversight mechanisms.

The crash has also had a lasting impact on public perception. Aviation safety, once taken for granted by many passengers, is now under renewed scrutiny. The incident has underscored the importance of transparency, timely investigations, and clear communication in maintaining trust in the aviation sector.

For Air India, the challenge is not just about appointing a new CEO but about redefining its operational culture and safety standards. The airline must navigate regulatory demands, financial recovery, and reputational rebuilding simultaneously, making this one of the most critical phases in its history.
