Battle With Rare Disease and Medical Complications
Shapoor Zadran arrived in India in January seeking advanced medical care. Initially, his condition showed signs of improvement, but complications soon followed. According to medical experts, HLH is a rare condition in which the immune system becomes hyperactive and starts attacking the body’s own tissues, affecting vital organs such as the bone marrow, liver, spleen, and lymph nodes.
The situation worsened after he suffered from multiple infections, including tuberculosis and later dengue, which further compromised his immunity. Diagnostic scans, including MRI and CT, reportedly revealed that the infection had spread to his brain, making treatment more complex.
A bone marrow test conducted in late March confirmed that he had reached an advanced stage of the disease. Doctors have since administered steroid-based treatment, which is beginning to show limited signs of response, though his condition remains fragile.
Career Overview and Support From Cricket Community
Shapoor Zadran represented Afghanistan in 80 international matches between 2009 and 2020, including 44 ODIs and 36 T20 internationals. Known for his aggressive pace bowling, he played a key role in Afghanistan’s rise in international cricket during its early years.
He made his international debut in 2009 against the Netherlands and later played his first T20 international in 2010 against Ireland. Over his career, he picked up a total of 80 wickets across formats.

Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis is a rare but life-threatening condition characterized by an overactive immune response. Instead of protecting the body, the immune system begins attacking healthy cells, leading to severe inflammation and organ damage.
Symptoms often include persistent high fever, low blood cell counts, and organ dysfunction. While the disease is more commonly seen in children, it can also affect adults, particularly those with weakened immunity or underlying infections.
Treatment typically involves immunosuppressive therapies, including steroids and other medications aimed at controlling the immune response. Early diagnosis is critical, but advanced-stage cases remain difficult to manage.
