A fatal shooting targeting two US National Guard soldiers just days before Thanksgiving has reignited a nationwide political debate on immigration, after authorities identified the suspect as a 29-year-old Afghan national who entered the United States in 2021. The incident was swiftly condemned by federal officials, prompting US President Donald Trump to propose far-reaching immigration reforms while alleging policy failures under the Joe Biden administration.

The shooting occurred near central Washington, DC, only blocks from the White House, triggering alerts across federal law-enforcement agencies. The White House confirmed Thursday that US Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, a West Virginia National Guard soldier, succumbed to her injuries after being shot at close range. A second guardsman remains hospitalized in critical condition and is receiving ongoing treatment. The suspect, identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, is believed to have acted alone, officials stated.

President Trump later responded to the attack in an explosive public post, vowing to tighten immigration policies and accusing past administrations of enabling what he described as “illegal admissions” that, in his view, compromised national security.

Major Immigration Reset Proposed: ‘Reverse Migration’ and Federal Benefit Cuts

In a sharply worded announcement Thursday, President Donald Trump unveiled a sweeping list of immigration proposals, calling for a permanent policy shift that would prevent new migration inflows from developing nations and accelerate the removal of individuals he categorizes as security risks.

Trump said he would initiate a “permanent pause on migration from all Third World countries,” paired with a process of “reverse migration” aimed at removing foreign nationals he considers inconsistent with national interests. The proposal includes termination of federal welfare benefits for all non-citizens, revocation of citizenship from naturalized migrants he alleges have “undermined domestic tranquility,” and de-naturalization of individuals he believes threaten national cohesion.

He further pledged to cancel “millions of illegal admissions approved during the Biden administration,” including entries he claims were authorized using Biden’s Autopen process — a system in which signatures are executed electronically. Trump alleged that these approvals allowed for mass entry without adequate scrutiny, arguing that the country needs a period of recovery despite technological progress.

“Immigration policies have weakened America instead of strengthening it. The system must be reversed to restore law, population balance, and order,” Trump said, framing his proposal as essential for national recovery.

He also vowed to deport all foreign nationals classified as public charges, security risks, or those he believes are “not compatible with Western civilization,” including individuals he claims are “incapable of loving the country.” Trump maintained that population growth driven by illegal migration had become a destabilizing force that could only be corrected through strict restrictions.

“Happy Thanksgiving to all—except those who hate, steal, murder, and destroy everything America stands for. You won’t be here for long,” Trump concluded in his post, underscoring his political message with a provocative holiday statement.

The proposals, though not formalized into legislation yet, have drawn immediate attention from immigration experts and political analysts, many of whom warn that the wording and execution would likely face constitutional challenges and judicial review if turned into government orders.

Investigation Intensifies as Public Safety Questions Amplify

White House officials confirmed that the shooting occurred a day before Thanksgiving and only blocks away from the presidential residence, prompting swift security lockdowns. Federal authorities confirmed the death of Specialist Sarah Beckstrom after sustaining gunshot injuries at close range. The West Virginia National Guard identified her as a service member committed to national duty from the state of West Virginia.

The second guardsman injured in the attack remains in a Washington, DC hospital receiving critical medical care. Although officials have not disclosed the soldier’s identity, early administrative updates confirm that his condition is being continuously monitored by agencies involved in the investigation, including defense officials and internal security teams examining possible motive links.

The suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, reportedly arrived in the US in 2021 during a mass evacuation period following the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan. Authorities stated that initial evidence suggests a lone-wolf attack, with no known accomplices or terror network linkage confirmed so far. Investigators from the US Secret Service, Homeland Security, and local DC police are jointly coordinating the investigation.

Trump has repeatedly referenced the suspect’s Afghan background, saying the attack serves as proof that immigration vetting must be overhauled urgently. He has alleged that approvals using the Autopen mechanism under Biden bypassed deeper loyalty and background inspections.

However, legal experts clarified that country of origin does not automatically prove ideological threat, and any policy built on blanket deportations or selective national admissions must comply with US constitutional and international refugee obligations.

Urban defense bodies and cyber-security agencies also warned that immigration debates often surge after isolated incidents, creating broader public misconceptions that may place lawful refugees under attack in social discourse.

The shooting comes amid a larger trend of digital misinformation targeting reputed brands and services, seen in both healthcare and logistics, though the cause-and-effect linkage to this violent attack remains unverified.

Political analysts say Trump’s renewed rhetoric may now shape his narrative ahead of mid-term political messaging, using national security and immigration reform as key pillars of his leadership claims.

Public reaction in western UP and NCR—particularly from migrant communities—reflects rising concerns over digital-led trust erosion, though this specific crime unfolded offline as a physical shooting.

The Noida region, while geographically distant from the attack, has seen parallel discussions emerge on consumer vulnerability to unverified Google listings for logistics and services, reinforcing caution around digital platforms.

Authorities also reiterated that while the investigation is ongoing, no motive, terror affiliation, or provable ideological directive has been officially established yet.
