September 23, Hangzhou: The highly anticipated 19th edition of the Asian Games officially kicked off in Hangzhou, People’s Republic of China. Originally slated for 2022, the event was postponed due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, with its next edition planned for 2026 in Japan. The Asian Games opening ceremony unfolded at the awe-inspiring Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center Stadium, often referred to as the “Big Lotus”.
The latest Hangzhou sports stadium was originally built as a football stadium and completed in 2018. The stadium can accommodate 80,000 spectators and will also host upcoming soccer matches.
Historic Moment for Gender Equality
In a historic first for the Games, each participating contingent featured two flag bearers, symbolising the Olympic Council of Asia’s commitment to gender parity. Leading the way for the largest-ever Indian contingent of 655 athletes were Hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh and boxer Lovlina Borgohain. Harmanpreet Singh, one of the finest drag-flicking prowess, brought home a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, ending India’s 41-year medal drought. Similarly, Lovlina Borgohain secured a bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics.
“To be chosen among one of India’s flag bearers is a matter of great pride for me. It also brings a lot of responsibility. I wish my fellow athletes all the best and we hope to come back with a lot of gold medals,” Borgohaoin, a bronze medallist at Tokyo Games, said.
Meet Chenchen, Congcong, and Lianlian
China unveiled its trio of mascots for the 19th Asian Games, affectionately named Chenchen, Congcong, and Lianlian. These charming robot mascots collectively bear the name ‘Memories of Jiangnan,’ paying homage to a poem by Tang dynasty poet Bai Juyi. These three robotic figures symbolize the vibrant cultural heritage of Hangzhou, the gracious host city.
A Global Gathering of Athletes
This edition of the Asian Games is hosting 12,000 athletes from 45 countries and is the largest edition of the sporting tournament so far. The event was opened by the Chinese President Xi Jinping in a splendid ceremony in Hangzhou. Various leaders from around the world attended the ceremony which included International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. However, India’s Sports Minister, Anurag Singh Thakur, withdrew from the event at the last moment due to a visa dispute involving three wushu athletes from Arunachal Pradesh, who were offered stapled visas by China. India vehemently objects to this, viewing it as discriminatory.
The Asian Games 2023 opening ceremony was a captivating fusion of China’s rich cultural heritage and its contemporary dynamism. The performances seamlessly integrated artificial intelligence and eco-friendly technologies, creating a breathtaking spectacle.
During the opening ceremony, several participating countries showcased their unique cultural outfits, infusing the event with a lively and colorful atmosphere. Simultaneously, mascots and volunteers greeted athletes with enthusiasm as they proudly paraded with their national flags.
PM Modi’s Encouragement
PM Narendra Modi extended his good wishes to Indian athletes participating in the tournament. He stated “The continuing success stories that we are scripting in the world of sports today is a testament to the changing outlook towards it. Our government is helping sportspersons at every level, TOPS is one such scheme of the government.”
