Ziro Valley

Ziro is a prominent town in the Lower Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh, India. Recognized for its Apatani cultural landscape, Ziro has earned a place in the Tentative List for UNESCO’s World Heritage Site. The economic and administrative hub of the area, Hapoli, is locally known as “Hao-Polyang” by the Apatani people.
Geographical Marvels

Situated at an elevation between 1688 to 2438 meters, Ziro Valley is renowned for its cool summer weather, pine-clad hills, and lush rice fields. This oldest town in Arunachal Pradesh is notably the home of the Apatani tribe.
Accessibility and Transport

Ziro is approximately 115 km from Itanagar, the state capital, accessible by road via the Hoj-Potin road or the Assam route. The nearest railway station is at Naharlagun, about 100 km away, and Ziro Airport, an Advanced Landing Ground of the Indian Air Force, is just 6 km from the town.
Diverse Climate
The region experiences four distinct seasons: a cold weather season from December to February, a pre-monsoon season with thunderstorms from March to May, the southwest monsoon from June to mid-October, and a post-monsoon period till November. The climate varies significantly across different altitudes and locations within the district.
Demographic and Linguistic Diversity
As of the 2011 census, Ziro had a balanced population of 12,806, with an equal male to female ratio. The most spoken language is Apatani, followed by Bengali, Assamese, Nepali, Bhojpuri, and Hindi.
The Apatani tribe is distinguished by their permanent wet paddy cultivation, in contrast to other tribes’ shifting cultivation methods. Historically, the Apatanis also practiced the art of facial tattoos, setting them apart from other tribes in the region.
UNESCO World Heritage Prospects

The Apatani cultural landscape of Ziro Valley is on the Tentative List for UNESCO’s World Heritage Site. The Arunachal Pradesh government has undertaken significant conservation efforts to support the inclusion of this culturally and ecologically important landscape in UNESCO’s final list.
