  • Zepto's high-pressure culture aims for performance, not for everyone.
  • Palicha admits work-life balance tweet was a stupid idea.

Aadit Palicha, CEO of Zepto, recently expressed regret over a 2024 post where he humorously downplayed the importance of work-life balance, calling it a “stupid idea.” Speaking to Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan, Palicha revisited the mini-controversy his post sparked, along with the broader topic of Zepto’s work culture. He acknowledged that the tweet, which criticized work-life balance in jest, had generated significant backlash, accusing him of promoting a toxic work environment.

Acknowledging the Mistake
In his conversation with Garry Tan, Palicha quickly addressed the backlash from his tweet. When Tan reminded him of the post, Palicha admitted it was a “stupid idea.” He then explained that his statement was meant to be humorous but acknowledged it was misinterpreted, leading to unnecessary controversy. Despite the initial negative reaction, Palicha continued to discuss the intense culture at Zepto, emphasizing that the company is focused on execution and delivering high performance.

Zepto’s Execution-Focused Culture
As Palicha elaborated on Zepto’s culture, he made it clear that the company’s environment is not suited for everyone. He stated that those who thrive in Zepto’s culture are highly ambitious individuals who are eager to achieve the best results in their professional lives. The company’s work environment is designed to push people to reach their full potential, with each employee held accountable for tangible results. Palicha believes that this intense focus on performance can help employees achieve their best version but recognizes that not everyone may be comfortable with this level of pressure.

While he admitted that running Zepto doesn’t feel like work for him personally, he acknowledged that the company’s high expectations may not be a good fit for all 3,000-plus employees. The company’s rigorous work culture is built for those who are highly motivated and ready to put in the effort to achieve excellence. However, Palicha also understands that this kind of environment might not appeal to everyone, especially those who value work-life balance.

The CEO’s reflections on his earlier work-life balance statement show his willingness to learn from the criticism and focus on refining his approach to work culture at Zepto.
