Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has etched his name in cricketing history by surpassing a long-standing record held by the legendary Sunil Gavaskar. In the ongoing Test against Bangladesh at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium, Jaiswal, in his 10th Test match, broke Gavaskar’s 51-year-old record for the most runs by an Indian batter in their first 10 Test matches. Gavaskar had set the record with 978 runs in 1973, but Jaiswal’s total now stands at an impressive 1,094 runs.
Jaiswal’s milestone came during the first Test match of the series, where he scored a composed 56 in the first innings, followed by 10 runs in the second innings. Despite a modest second-innings score, Jaiswal’s overall performance was enough to eclipse Gavaskar’s record, which had remained unbeaten for over five decades.
His total of 1,094 runs places him fourth on the all-time list for the most runs scored in the first 10 Test matches, with only cricketing greats Don Bradman (Australia), Everton Weekes (West Indies), and George Headley (West Indies) ahead of him.
Most Runs After First 10 Tests:
Don Bradman (Australia) – 1,446 runs
Everton Weekes (West Indies) – 1,125 runs
George Headley (West Indies) – 1,102 runs
Yashasvi Jaiswal (India) – 1,094 runs
Mark Taylor (Australia) – 1,088 runs
Jaiswal has been a standout performer for India throughout 2024, amassing 806 runs in 13 innings this year alone. His consistency at the crease has made him India’s top run-scorer across all formats in international cricket for the year.
In the ongoing Test match against Bangladesh, Jaiswal demonstrated his resilience on Day 1, playing a vital knock of 56 runs at a time when India’s star batsmen—Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Shubman Gill—struggled to make significant contributions. His performance has further solidified his place in India’s Test lineup, where he currently boasts an impressive average of 67.16, with two centuries and four half-centuries to his name.
As Jaiswal’s Test run tally grows, he is also closing in on becoming India’s top-ranked Test batter, a position currently held by Rohit Sharma. Jaiswal’s remarkable rise in international cricket is being closely followed, with the young star continuing to set new milestones and push the boundaries of his potential.
