In a significant development concerning the preparation for the Paris Olympics, top Indian wrestlers have made a request to the ad-hoc committee for additional time to prepare for the crucial selection trials. These trials, initially slated for February 27-29, are imperative for determining the athletes who will represent India in the upcoming Olympic qualifiers.
Confusion Over Selection Policy Leads to Athletes’ Plea
The wrestling community has been plunged into uncertainty after the newly-elected Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), which assumed office in December, announced its intention to scrap the previously declared selection policy by the ad-hoc committee.
The policy, introduced in November, mandated that quota place winners must undergo selection trials to confirm their Olympic spots. The suspension of the WFI and the subsequent takeover by an ad-hoc committee have left athletes seeking clarity and assurance about the process determining their participation in the Paris Games.
“The national championships have been delayed, so the wrestlers need some more time to prepare,” explained an official familiar with the discussions. This plea for additional preparation time underscores the athletes’ commitment to optimal performance at the qualifiers.
International Training and Policy Clarification

Prominent wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, and Anshu Malik, have been vocal about the need for clear guidelines. Punia is currently honing his skills in Russia, while Deepak Punia trains in the US, highlighting the global effort Indian wrestlers are making to qualify for the Olympics. Sarita, a world championships medallist, emphasized the importance of a well-defined Olympic selection policy. “It is a very important year for wrestlers, and we need to plan our schedule,” she stated, calling for transparency and timely announcements from the authorities.
Wrestlers’ Requests Under Consideration
The ad-hoc committee is reportedly considering the wrestlers’ requests, including a proposal to advance the trial dates by 10 days and provide weight relaxation. The Asian Olympic Qualifier and the World Olympic Qualifier, crucial for securing Olympic berths, are scheduled for April and May, respectively, in Kyrgyzstan and Turkey.
This year’s selection trials carry unprecedented importance, not just for determining participants in the Olympic qualifiers but also for potential ‘wrestle-offs’ to challenge quota winners for Olympic spots. With the ad-hoc committee’s response pending, the wrestling community remains hopeful for a resolution that supports the athletes’ needs and Olympic aspirations.
