The build up to the women’s premier league 2026 has taken an unexpected turn with several key international players withdrawing from the tournament, forcing franchises into late squad changes and leadership decisions just days before the season begins.

star withdrawals disrupt team plans ahead of wpl 2026

In a major setback for defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru, australian superstar Ellyse Perry has pulled out of the women’s premier league 2026 citing personal reasons. Perry, one of the most influential players in the history of the tournament, had been retained by rcb for ₹2 crore ahead of the mega auction held in november. Her withdrawal comes just weeks before the competition is scheduled to begin on january 9, dealing a significant blow to rcb’s title defence.

Perry’s absence leaves a major void in both batting and bowling for the bengaluru-based franchise. She has been one of the standout performers in the league, finishing as the second-highest run scorer overall and winning the orange cap in 2024. That season also marked rcb’s maiden wpl title, with perry playing a pivotal role by scoring 347 runs and picking up seven wickets in nine matches. Her consistency, experience, and ability to deliver in high-pressure moments made her a cornerstone of the team built around captain Smriti Mandhana.

To address the sudden vacancy, rcb have named indian all-rounder Sayali Satghare as perry’s replacement. Satghare, who has previously represented Gujarat Giants, joins the defending champions at her reserve price of ₹30 lakh. Although relatively inexperienced at the wpl level, her inclusion reflects rcb’s preference for an all-round option who can provide balance to the side in perry’s absence.

Another significant withdrawal has come from australian all-rounder Annabel Sutherland, who has opted out of the tournament for similar personal reasons. Sutherland was retained by Delhi Capitals for ₹2.2 crore and has been an integral part of the franchise since the 2024 edition. Over 17 matches, she scored 150 runs and claimed 13 wickets, offering valuable depth with her seam bowling and middle-order batting.

Delhi capitals have moved quickly to secure a replacement, naming australian leg-spinner Alana King as sutherland’s stand-in. King joins the squad for ₹60 lakh and brings with her a wealth of international experience. Known for her control and wicket-taking ability in the middle overs, she has taken a notable number of wickets in t20 internationals and has prior exposure to the wpl, having featured briefly for UP Warriorz in an earlier season. Her inclusion is expected to strengthen delhi’s bowling attack, particularly on spin-friendly surfaces.

Further disruption has been felt at up warriorz, where left-arm pacer Tara Norris will miss the entire tournament due to national duty. Norris holds a unique place in wpl history as the first bowler to take a five-wicket haul in the league, making her absence a notable loss for the side. In response, up warriorz have signed uncapped australian all-rounder Charli Knott for ₹10 lakh, opting for versatility as they reshape their squad.

leadership changes and squad reshaping across franchises

Amid the flurry of withdrawals and replacements, Gujarat Giants have brought stability to their camp by confirming Ashleigh Gardner as captain for wpl 2026. Gardner, the top-ranked t20i all-rounder in women’s cricket, had already led the side in the previous edition and guided them to the playoffs. Her reappointment provides continuity at a time when several teams are adjusting to last-minute changes.

Gardner has been a central figure for gujarat giants since the inaugural wpl season in 2023. Across 25 matches, she has accumulated 567 runs and claimed 25 wickets, underlining her value as a genuine all-rounder. In wpl 2025, she enjoyed a particularly impressive campaign with the bat, scoring 243 runs at a strike rate exceeding 164, while also contributing eight wickets with the ball. Her leadership is seen as crucial as the franchise looks to build on recent progress and push deeper into the tournament.

For up warriorz, the upcoming season will also mark a fresh chapter under new head coach Abhishek Nayar. While the franchise is yet to announce its captain, the management faces the challenge of integrating new players while maintaining competitiveness in a league that continues to grow in intensity and quality. The absence of established overseas stars like norris increases the responsibility on domestic players and emerging internationals to step up.

The withdrawals of perry and sutherland, two of the most prominent australian players in the wpl, highlight the evolving demands on elite women cricketers, who are balancing international commitments, personal considerations, and franchise obligations across a packed global calendar. For the league, these developments underscore both its rising stature and the complexities of managing player availability at the highest level.

As the women’s premier league 2026 approaches its start date, teams are recalibrating strategies and combinations at short notice. While the absence of marquee names is a setback, it also opens doors for new players to make an impact on a major stage. The coming season promises fresh narratives, leadership tests, and opportunities for emerging talent as franchises adapt to a reshaped competitive landscape.
